ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
November 11, 2003
Ah, what a lovely November day; what a lovely Veterans' Day; what a lovely
ceremony for Service Above Self Award. (How many of you will admit that you
forgot and went to Ellie's Diner?) Since our esteemed president was not there,
perhaps he went to the diner! No, just kidding! President Mark Denkler was
out of the country. Our President-Elect Bill Adams did a terrific job holding
the ceremony. He also led a smooth board of directors meeting, at 7:30 a.m.
this morning. Bill, that gives you practice for next year; you're gonna be such
a pro.
Ernie Simon was emcee for today's presentation. He always lends an air of
sophistication and expertise to this ceremony. He and his board came up with
another "grand winner." We, in Delray Beach, are so fortunate to have so many
real winners living and working among us. Each year, it is such an honor to
pay tribute to these fine folks.
The purpose of our Service Above Self Award is to recognize and honor
individuals who have given to our community something special of themselves,
individuals who have dedicated themselves to the betterment of our community and who
have contributed substantially to the enhancement of our quality of life by
efforts unrelated to their employment or political offices.
Our previous recipients are:
Barbara Dodge Smith C. Spencer Pompey
Alexander A. (Sandy) Simon, Jr. Frances Fontaine Bourque
Dr. E. Monroe Farber Leon M. Weekes
Each of these recipient's names are inscribed upon the Rotary plaque in Old
School Square's Walkway of Honor, and a gift of $1,000.00 donated to Old School
Square in their honor. The Rotary Club of Delray Beach has made a ten year
commitment to pledge this amount yearly.
Today, a new name was added. Our number seven winner is George T. Elmore,
Founder and President of Hardrives of Delray, Inc; a heavy construction firm,
constructing major highway projects, etc. This is a far cry from his humble
beginnings, with a pickup truck and two employees, paving driveways.
George T. Elmore came to South Florida in 1953, from Western Pennsylvania,
and started his business. He is married to Wilma; raised two children, Debra
and Craig. He was in the U. S. Army, during the Korean War.
Mr. Elmore has served either as President or Chairman of the Associated
General Contractors of America (local and state), FAU Foundation, WPBT Miami Public
Television, PBC Council of the Arts, Crisis Line and Informational Services,
Economic Council of PBC and Criminal Justice Commission. He is a board member
of many organizations, including the Kravis Center, Boy Scouts, Palm Beach
Historical Society, Education Commission, Education Foundation, Old School
Square, Literacy Foundation, The Center for Technology, Enterprise & Development,
United Way, Local Initiative Support Corporation and Junior Achievement.
Mr. Elmore is a firm believer in the free enterprise system and is a
recipient of the Palm Beach Post's John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Business Leader
of the Year Award, and Northwood University Outstanding Business Leader Award.
After reading all this, is there any wonder why Mr. George T. Elmore was an
excellent choice for our prestigious Service Above Self Award? Mr. Elmore, we
salute you on this Veteran's Day!
REMINDER: Holiday Party; December 5, 2003, Delray Beach Golf Course. Next
