ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
November 18, 2003
President Mark Denkler has returned from his journey, presiding over our
meeting today. Emmett Gumm, Assistant District Governor, offered a true Rotary
invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon, nursing a few injuries, (after falling off a
ladder at work) still was able to lead us in two of our old favorites. Bruce
Williams, thank you for your lovely renditions of some of our favorite show
tunes.
Nancy Owens, we wish you a Happy, Happy Birthday. Thank you for your
generous gift. It's for certain, it's getting cold up north. We were blessed with
many guests and snowbirds today. Harvey Brown warmly greeted each of them.
Among them was Con Fecher ($20.00), Bill Talen ($15.00), John Ahearn, David
Feinstein, Bev Bowra ($5.00), Marian Blackwell and Rex Welton. Candace Etzler,
Sergeant at Arms, collected a whopping $192.00 today, thanks to the generosity
of many of our "snowbirds," donating to our fund.
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett welcomed and presented our banner to Al Husle, from
Huntington Station, NY. Georgina also gave us a "winning" stock report. She
also mentioned the upcoming Holiday Party, and the beginning of the sale of our
holiday wreaths. Last year, our holiday wreaths were so lovely, they sold out
quickly. This year, please reserve your wreath next week; they may be gone
the following week! The price is $25.00; order them for gifts, also.
Lula Butler had the honor of introducing our Student of the Month, Kiesha
Moodie. Kiesha is a very active young lady, with lots of charisma. She attends
Atlantic High School. Her objective is to obtain a bachelors degree from an
accredited four year university. She already has much work experience. After
school, she teaches piano to grades K-4. Her extra curricular activities
include Student Government, FEA, FBLA, Unity Service Club, Eagles for Excellence,
Key Club, Varsity Track and Field, Varsity Flag Football and Varsity
Cheerleading.
Kiesha's community services are way too many to mention (such a busy young
lady). Some of her awards include: Student Government President, Freshman and
Sophomore Class President, FBLA President, National Cheerleading Assoc.
All-Amnerican Nominee, Who's Who Among America's High Schools, Zora Neal Huston
Literary Achievement Award and Junior Achievement Leadership Award. Does she ever
sleep? It is no wonder Lula Butler was so proud to present Kiesha as our
Student of the Month.
Kiesha had as her guest, her mother, who is a teacher, and also introduced
her choice of Teacher of the Month, Mr. Joseph "Dave" Winkler. He was educated
at Olivet College, MI. He has taught American History/Government at Atlantic
High School for three years. His extracurricular activities include coaching
football and wrestling. He is also Assistant Department Head. He is married
for twenty years; has three "great" children.
Leo Phillips had the honor of introducing our guest speaker, Jim Sisserson,
Chair of the Rotary Foundation for our District 6930. Most of us already know
Jim, as our former District Governor. He plainly explains what the Rotary
Foundation is all about, and what it takes to keep it going. Jim, is perfect for
this position, since he is a major donor to the Foundation. He had a
terrific presentation, explaining how the Rotary Foundation contributions are used
within our District, as well as International.
Rotary Foundation's mission is to Achieve World Peace and Understanding.
Polio is our biggest challenge. Polio is still spreading in Africa and
India, and the need for further efforts to eradicate this scourge is our main goal.
Our club has pledged $200.00 per member, being $100.00 for last year and
$100.00 for this year. Last year, we met our club goal in a monetary sense, but
with only 40% participation. We need for all to be involved! This is a
project we can all be proud of. If you have not made your contribution, see Leo
Phillips, regarding your commitment.
REMINDER: Holiday Party, December 5, 2003, 7:00 p.m., Delray Beach Golf Club.
The price is only $40.00, per person. There will be a complete buffet
dinner, including appetizers, one hour open bar, live music, featuring the Lunar
Tune Music Trio, and a Silent Auction. We will be sharing our wonderful evening
with the Delray Beach Sunrise Rotary Club. We are all looking forward to
this event. For reservations, contact Lou Cucci (330-8445) or Lyn Huckle
(732-8224).
Since I will be unable to attend our noon meetings for a short period of
time, Nancy King and Bruce Galloway have graciously "volunteered" to publish our
Rotary Ramblin's, in my absence. (Someone has to mind the store; that's me!)
I will see you at the Holiday Party!
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones! Peace!
