ROTARY RAMBLINGS
November 25, 2003
=E2=80=98Tis the season to be thankful and we=E2=80=99re certainly grateful=20=
to all of our=20
officers and members who serve our club faithfully and give so generously of=
=20
their time. We especially thank President Mark Denkler who once again did a=
=20
beautiful job presiding over today=E2=80=99s meeting. Thanks also, to Harve=
y Brown for=20
delivering the invocation.
Celebrating birthdays today were Ken Peltzie and our piano man, Bruce=20
Williams. Bruce displayed his great versatility by accompanying us while st=
anding as=20
we sang "Happy Birthday" to him and Ken.
It was good to see how well Jimmy Weatherspoon is recovering from his=20
accident. He led the singing this afternoon and he had us all smiling as we=20=
sang our=20
favorite melody from the Rotary songbook, "Smile".
Bruce Wenzel welcomed our international visitors, Dr. Oswald Woerz from=20
Germany and Al Hamel from Canada. Also joining us from Irbana, Illinois was=
Cam=20
Murphy who has joined our club as a snowbird. Welcome, Cam! Visiting for a=
=20
second time was Lyn Huckle=E2=80=99s handsome young grandson, Chris. No wond=
er Lyn is=20
such a proud grandmother! Special thanks to all members who are helping to=20=
keep=20
our attendance figures up by making up at other clubs. This week all of the=
=20
make ups were done at the Delray Beach Sunrise Club!
Everyone seemed to be in the spirit of Thanksgiving, so Sergeant at Arms Ton=
y=20
Allerton managed to do extremely well raising money for our scholarship fund=
.=20
Last minute contributions from David Armstrong and Bruce Galloway brought=20
the grand total to $204.00! Marilyn Ochs donated the banner which we did no=
t=20
give away. Thanks to all for your generous gifts.
Bill Adams reminded us to place our orders for the beautiful holiday wreaths=
=20
our club is selling. The price has dropped to $20.00, so take advantage of=20
the bargain. The wreaths make wonderful gifts for friends and business=20
associates. Checks should be made payable to the Rotary Fund. =20
We are hoping for a wonderful turn out for the holiday party on December 5th=
=20
at the Delray Beach Golf Club. If you are planning to go, bring your check=20=
to=20
Lyn Huckle next week.
Bill Adams introduced today=E2=80=99s speaker, Paul Hamblin, Community Outre=
ach=20
Manager for Hanley-Hazelden, a non-profit Chemical Dependency Service. Paul=
is=20
President of the Palm Beach Rotary Club and his Rotary ties started at birth=
. =20
His grandfather founded a company that makes the pins, banners and other Rot=
ary=20
paraphernalia used by clubs all over the world. Today he spoke to us about=20
the many programs that are available at Hanley- Hazelden. The drug and alco=
hol=20
treatment center has been in West Palm Beach since 1986 but its roots in=20
Minnesota go back well over 50 years.
Paul shared the sobering news that one in ten persons is drug or alcohol=20
dependent. Hanley-Hazelden is a provider of treatment, recovery, research,=20
training and education, offering programs, services and publications for=20
individuals, families and communities affected by chemical dependency. Tha=
nks you Paul,=20
for the excellent program, and for sharing your personal experience with us.=
=20
=20
Once again, Ernie Simon held the winning ticket for the Green Hat. The=20
elusive Ace of Spades remained in the deck, however, so better luck next tim=
e,=20
Ernie! =20
Next week Paul Barber will present a program on Healthier, More Loving=20
Relationships.
Best wishes to all for a wonderful Thanksgiving. Enjoy your turkey dinners!=
