ROTARY RAMBLINGS
December 9, 2003
Our meeting was called to order by President Mark Denkler. Special thanks to=
=20
Bruce Williams for putting us in a holiday mood by playing our favorite=20
Christmas melodies as we arrived. Leo Phillips provided the inspiration for=
the day=20
and Steve Rich led the singing. We delivered a musical tribute to Jess=20
Sowards who was celebrating his birthday.
Our visiting Rotarians were introduced by Bruce Wenzel. He extended a warm=20
welcome to Geff Dennis from the Bahamas, Cam Murphy from Urbana, Illinois, B=
ob=20
Ridgway from Warwick, Rhode Island and Gerson Blatnick from Wilmington,=20
Delaware. =20
Wearing the armband as Sergeant-at-Arms was Ernie Simon who collected $137.=20=
=20
Jess Sowards gave $43 for his birthday. Other popular categories were "Go=20
FAU" and the Dolphin Offence Defense Fund. The pot was enhanced by our AWOL=
=E2=80=99s. =20
We also received ten happy dollars from John Arnold who is justifiably proud=
=20
of his son who directed an orchestra and chorus at Carnegie Hall. Harvey Br=
own=20
donated the banner which we did not give away. Thanks to all for your=20
generous contributions! =20
=20
Hack Allen announced that he is making a new list of members to give the=20
invocations at our meetings. If you are interested in thanking God for our=20
blessings, please contact Hack.
Next week is the 100th anniversary of the first flight in Kitty Hawk, North=20
Carolina. To commemorate the occasion, plans are underway to re-create the=20
Wright Brothers=E2=80=99 flight as a tribute to the legacy they left behind.=
Bill Talen=20
announced that he has been chosen to be on the ground crew for the historic=20
re-enactment. Congratulations, Bill! =20
Mark Denkler reported that a good time was had by all at our annual holiday=20
party. He thanked Pat Archer, Lyn Huckle, Lou Cucci and Georgina Kerr-Jarre=
tt=20
for the great job they did planning and organizing the party. Although it w=
asn
=E2=80=99t a fund-raiser, we still managed to make about $1400.
Bill Adams introduced our guest speaker, Kim Amigone, who is with Aid to=20
Victims of Domestic Violence (AVDA). Kim has been a Violence Prevention Edu=
cator=20
at the Delray Beach shelter for four years. During that time she has seen=20
people from all walks of life come through the doors for help. =20
The shelter and its counselors provide outreach services for adults and=20
children. Their job at the shelter is to empower the people to make their c=
hoices.
=20
The shelter currently has 25 beds and those in need are allowed to stay from=
=20
6-8 weeks. Kim says transitional housing is being built that will accommoda=
te=20
42 additional people who will be able to stay rent free for up to two years.
All services are free. The shelter is supported by the United Way, Palm=20
Beach County, the cities of Delray Beach and Boca Raton and private donation=
s. =20
Kim said that one of the best ways of supporting AVDA is by telling people w=
ho=20
are in need of help about the agency. =20
Members who are interested in donating clothes or other items should call=20
265-3797, extension 100.=20
Marilyn Ochs held the winning ticket for the Green Hat.
Roger P. Richardson, Pastor at the Church of the Palms is being published fo=
r=20
membership.
Next week=E2=80=99s program: Howard Binkow will provide tips on how to impr=
ove your=20
listening skills. At least I think that=E2=80=99s what Bill Adams told me.=20=
I wasn=E2=80=99t=20
really listening.
Best wishes to all for a wonderful week!=20
