ROTARY RAMBLINGS
December 16, 2003

Today President Mark handled the gavel, Andrew Hall gave the benediction,=20
Fred Bonardi as Sergeant-at-Arms collected $133. Harvard Q. Brown introduce=
d=20
visitors and guests. Always good to see Bishop "Slim" Hall, =E2=80=98cause=20=
then we can=20
be sure it=E2=80=99s "season". Steve Rich lead the howling accompanied by t=
he old=20
tinkler, Bruce Williams.

Guy goes into a restaurant in his old hometown for a pre-Christmas breakfast=
.=20
 He tells the waitress he=E2=80=99d like the eggs benedict. She brings his=20=
order in=20
a big shiny hubcap. "What=E2=80=99s with the hubcap," the guy gasps. The w=
aitress=20
sings: "There=E2=80=99s no plate like chrome for the hollandaise!"

When questioned, E. George Simon emphatically denied that the Bicknell=20
"Fighting Sandfleas" football squad was down in the Caymans "visiting their=20
scholarships." (Four years, compounded, can buy you a nice little worm farm=20=
back=20
home.)

Today=E2=80=99s program was introduced by Bill Adams and our speaker was How=
ard=20
Binkow on "Improve Your Listening Skills." He had a career in home building=
 and=20
radio. He wrote "Guys, Are We Really Listening". First he admitted he didn=
=E2=80=99t=20
know how to listen. He claims harmony and peace through learning to listen.=
 =20
He works about ten hours a week. He has visited schools, business groups an=
d=20
churches to tell his story about listening more effectively.

Howard passed out a list of eleven suggestions on how to be a better=20
listener. He told us about something we have all encountered, the verbose s=
ales=20
person, who basically doesn=E2=80=99t want to listen.

Keeping an open mind is difficult. Not interrupting is also quite difficult=
 =20
He identified door openers and door closers. Retention of a spoken subject=20
is about seven percent. The Q and A was lively.

Announcements by Bill Adams included the availability of Rotary wreaths for=20
Christmas display.

Bishop Andy tells about two Arkansas boll weevils. One went to New York and=
=20
became famous. The other stayed home on the "peak o=E2=80=99 the holler" a=
nd never=20
amounted to much. He was known as the lesser of two weevils.

Is it about time to hear and read about the Rotary Club of Delray Beach=20
Rotary Fund? The fund is a philanthropic project providing funding for educ=
ation,=20
charitable and scientific programs. Rotary International encourages Rotaria=
ns=20
to consider the fund when setting up bequests and endowments.

What does "Q" really mean? "Mom always said it stood for quality. Dad says=
=20
it was quandary. I like Mom=E2=80=99s better." That was the response from=20=
Harvard Q.=20
Brown, bon vivant, raconteur, popular man about town and gourmand, when=20
quizzed by a member of our crack editorial staff.

Jon Simon had the winning ticket for the Green Hat.

This week=E2=80=99s scribe:  Gene Pool
Next week=E2=80=99s scribe:  Nancy King
Next week=E2=80=99s program: Exchange Student Leticia Camargo from Brazil.

And finally, did you hear about the Buddhist who refused Novocain during roo=
t=20
canal work? He claimed he wanted to transcend dental medication.
