Rotary Ramblings
December 23, 2003
We had a great crowd at our meeting on the Tuesday before the Christmas=20
holiday. President Mark Denkler was at the helm, Hack Allen gave the invoca=
tion,=20
and Jimmy Weatherspoon, with the help of Bruce Williams, led us in song. Ji=
mmy=20
put us in the holiday spirit by offering his special rendition of "Santa=20
Claus Is Coming To Town." Fred Bonardi gave some encouragement to investors=
with=20
his stock market report. The market was up again by 11 points for the 5th d=
ay=20
in a row. We got an insider's tip when Fred predicted that the market will=20
fluctuate in the new year.=20
Harvey Brown introduced our international visitor Colin McLernon from Bogor,=
=20
Indonesia who was given the banner, donated by Nancy Owens. Colin brought=20
good wishes from his club of about 25 members. His club built a $1.4 millio=
n=20
school to provide vocational training to local students. All students are=20
guaranteed a job upon graduation. Similar schools have been built in Jordan=
, two in=20
Viet Nam and five in South America.
Among our guests today was "Bingo" Gene Webb visiting from North Carolina an=
d=20
sporting a new beard. Great to have you back, Gene! =20
Sergeant-At-Arms Tony Allerton had a good day collecting dollars for our=20
scholarship fund. Joyce Lunsford brought in 20 Susan B. Anthony coins which=
she=20
donated on behalf of her granddaughter who graduated from the University of=20
Florida. Her granddaughter plans to teach handicapped children. This genero=
us=20
contribution, along with the others, brought the day=E2=80=99s total to $80.=
00.
Bill Adams introduced today=E2=80=99s speaker, Rotary Exchange Student Letic=
ia=20
Camargo from Brazil. Bill and Charlotte Adams have been host parents to Let=
icia=20
since her arrival in August. Leticia presented a delightful slide presentat=
ion=20
which gave us a pictorial introduction to her family. It was interesting to=
=20
see that many of her family members are blue-eyed blondes. =20
Her family is very active in the exchange programs. They hosted an exchange=20
student from Australia and are currently hosting a young man from Canada. =20
Leticia=E2=80=99s sister was an exchange student in Houston, Texas two years=
ago.=20
Leticia also told us of some activities she has been involved in since her=20
arrival in Florida. Judging from the pictures, it has been a fun-filled fiv=
e=20
months! She has visited Key West, Disney World, South Beach and toured the=20
Morikami Museum. Leticia joined with other Rotary exchange students for a b=
oat=20
ride on the Intracoastal Waterway where she was given the opportunity to dri=
ve=20
the boat. She has performed at football games and Art & Jazz on the Avenue=20
with the Eaglettes dance team from Atlantic High School. Knowing of her lov=
e of=20
ballet, Pat and Leo Phillips treated her to a performance of The Nutcracker=20
where she was introduced to a dancer from Brazil. =20
Leticia will be traveling to Annapolis, Maryland for Christmas. She=E2=80=
=99s=20
looking forward to seeing snow for the first time! Leticia admitted that it=
has=20
been hard to be without her friends and family but that everyone has been=20
wonderful. We look forward to having Leticia visit us again soon!
The lucky ticket holder for the Green Hat was Stormi Norem.
Next Week=E2=80=99s Program: Coton Stine and her daughter will present a pr=
ogram on=20
the benefits of yoga.=20
Best wishes to all for happiness this holiday season and throughout the=20
coming year!
