Rotary Ramblings
January 6, 2004

President Mark Denkler was at the helm presiding over the first meeting of=20
the new year. Gerry Meeks led us in prayer and Jimmy Weatherspoon did his u=
sual=20
wonderful job leading us in a rousing selection of our favorite songs=20
accompanied by Bruce Williams. Celebrating a birthday today was Leo Phillip=
s.  Happy=20
Birthday, Leo!

Guests and visiting Rotarians were introduced by Harvey Brown. Harvey=20
welcomed our four visitors, Jim Kenaby from Worcester, Massachusetts; Al Ham=
el from=20
Fredericton, New Brunswick; Bernie Shapiro from Woodbridge, Connecticut and=20
Ray Schalow from Chasko, Minnesota. Tony Allerton presented the banner to R=
ay=20
who was visiting us for the first time. Special thanks to Marilyn Ochs, Bob=
=20
Erickson and Mert Anderson for making up at other clubs. If you need to mak=
e=20
up, you can attend next week=E2=80=99s Board Meeting at Ellie=E2=80=99s at 7=
:30 a.m.

It was a good day for Sergeant-at-Arms Roy Simon who collected $146. Leo=20
Phillips contributed $59 in honor of his birthday. The special of the day w=
as=20
"Happy New Year." Another popular category was, the Pete Rose "Don=E2=80=
=99t Bet On It"=20
fund! =20

Bill Adams introduced our own Tony Allerton as the guest speaker. Tony=20
presented a program on The Crossroads Club, a facility in Delray Beach that=20
provides a safe haven for those who have been affected by addictive substanc=
es.  Tony=20
has been attending meetings at the Crossroads Clubs since 1982 when he becam=
e=20
a recovering alcoholic. The Crossroads Club is in the "life maintenance"=20
business and provides a meeting facility for groups to develop and implement=
=20
programs that support and enhance the recovery process. Over 70 meetings ar=
e held=20
each week for over 2500 people. =20

Crossroads offers programs to equip recovering individuals with the skills=20
necessary to avoid relapse and to lead responsible and productive lives. A=20
program that Tony is personally involved in is the Living Skills-In-The-Scho=
ols=20
Program. Individuals go to local schools to speak to students about the=20
negative experiences they have had due to substance abuse. Tony emphasized=20=
the=20
importance of educating young people about the consequences of substance abu=
se=20
before they become teenagers.    =20

The Crossroads Club is funded by voluntary contributions and is supported by=
=20
those in recovery who want to give something back to the community. Tony=20
considers himself fortunate to be alive today and is grateful for the suppor=
t he=20
has received through Crossroads. Thank you, Tony, for an excellent and=20
inspiring program! =20

The lucky ticket holder for the Green Hat was Sam Aldoerffer.

Next week Kurt Godfrey, one of our "new" members will tell us about his life=
=20
experiences, and our program will be a Rotary Roundtable. Enjoy your week!=20=
