ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
January 20, 2004
I must start this newsletter with a big apology to Bruce Galloway. I did not
mention last week, when I was thanking Nancy King for her good efforts with
the newsletter, the fact that on two occasions, Bruce wrote the newsletter.
Since he wrote the newsletter for five years, a few years back, most of you
detected his style of writing (poor Harvey Q.) anyway. Bruce, we thank you for
your efforts.
It was good to see President Mark Denkler back from his "shoe trip" to
Brazil. He led another fine meeting. Emmett Gumm gave an eloquent invocation. Jim
Weatherspoon was again, the liveliest song leader in all Rotary! He sure
gets us off to a great start. Bruce Williams, your compliments never cease; it
would take a page to relate all of them to you.
Bruce Wenzel, his teeth still chattering from his cold trip to New York,
greeted about five visiting Rotarians; two of them Canadians, each giving us their
club banners.
Sergeant at Arms Tony Allerton raked in a whopping $250.00 today. Among the
contributors were Nancy King, with five dollars, for a picture of her and her
daughter, appearing on the society page of a local newspaper. Lyn Huckle,
along with her guest, daughter Kay, was celebrating her birthday. She donated a
whopping $78.00 to the club. Lyn, Happy Birthday from all of us.
Bruce Galloway donated five dollars, to get Egon Kurz to read his latest
humorous poem (wearing Bruce's reading glasses; they were becoming, Egon). He got
away before I could get a copy for the Ramblings. I will try for next week.
Emmett Gumm, Past President, now Assistant Governor of our District,
represented our club, and spoke on behalf of our president, at a recent District
Meeting. He had the opportunity to brag a bit about our club; thanks, Emmett.
Jim Blocker had the winning ticket from the green hat to draw a card from the
deck. Well, Jim, you just made next week's odds better!
Bill Adams introduced our guest speaker today, Reverend Andy Hall. He came
into the Delray Beach Rotary Club in 1970. He has seen lots of golf buddies
come and go. For those of you that have never heard Andy speak, he is a real
treat. He has one of the funniest senses of humor around. He gave us a long
list of phrases we (especially those from the South) use daily. He surprised us
by telling us many of these phrases were from the Bible, or were political.
The list was long, the laughs were long. As I looked around the room, I saw
that everyone was enjoying his "dry wit." (Some of you thought these were
unusual, but in the household I grew up in, they were the daily language used by
my mother and grandmother; two truly southern ladies.)
Goodness, gracious, sakes alive! Before I babble any further, it's time to
tell you that our guest speaker for next week will be our own John Callahan,
III, Director of Delray Beach Library.
