Rotary Ramblings
January 27, 2004
President Mark Denkler presided over another fantastic meeting in a room=20
packed with members, guests and visiting Rotarians from near and far. Dave=20=
O=E2=80=99
Connell gave the invocation and Wally Doud led us in song. Three cheers to=20=
Wally=20
for inviting us to try some new material. Since it was soggy when many of u=
s=20
arrived at Ellie=E2=80=99s, Wally had us "Singing In The Rain" accompanied=20=
by the=20
talented Bruce Williams. Then, in honor of the New Hampshire Primary, we tu=
rned=20
patriotic with "America The Beautiful." Great job, Wally! As Harvey Q. sai=
d,=20
"You have to admire anyone who wants to stand up and lead this group in=20
singing!"
Birthday greetings were sung to Jim Blocker, followed by anniversary good=20
wishes to Steve Rich. Steve and his bride are celebrating their 55th weddin=
g=20
anniversary! Our hearty congratulations! We wish you many more years of=20
happiness.
Harvey Brown had the pleasure of introducing our many visiting Rotarians and=
=20
guests. Fred Runkel paid for and presented our banner to Harold Burd of=20
Washington, New Jersey. Harold has been a Rotarian for 54 years and his clu=
b has=20
about 28 members. Joining us as guests were Joyce Lunsford=E2=80=99s daught=
er, Melody=20
and Mark Denkler=E2=80=99s son, Drew. Candace Etzler brought Reverend Roger=
=20
Richardson as her guest and Jess Sowards invited Jeff Costello, from the Cit=
y=E2=80=99s=20
Planning & Zoning Department. Welcome to all!
Tony Allerton did quite well as Sergeant-at-Arms, collecting $162.00 A fair=
=20
share of the pot came from our birthday and anniversary celebrants. Nancy=20
King made the Society page of the newspaper again (this time the Sun-Sentine=
l)=20
with her daughters Hayley and Heather, so she contributed $5.00. Additional=
=20
dollars came in honor of the Queen Mary II, football widows, another wonderf=
ul=20
story by Egon Kurz and=E2=80=A6whatever.=20
President Mark announced that the Wine Tasting party will be held on=20
Saturday, March 6th at Old School Square, so save the date!
Our Program Chairman and President-elect Bill Adams had the honor of=20
introducing our guest speaker and fellow Rotarian John Callahan. John is Di=
rector of=20
the Delray Beach Public Library, and if he looked like a happy man it is=20
because voters passed the Bond Referendum last week. This means there will=20=
be=20
funding to help toward furnishing the new library that is being built on Atl=
antic=20
Avenue.
John began the presentation with a beautifully produced video that originall=
y=20
aired on the ABC "Boomers and Seniors" program. The video gave an overview=20
of the library -- where it is today and where it is going in the future. Th=
e=20
library isn=E2=80=99t just a library, according to John, it is an "informati=
on resource=20
center." The new library will be a world class facility with shelf space fo=
r=20
over 250,000 items. There will be meeting rooms, exhibit space, a children=
=E2=80=99s=20
area, space for young adults and teens, and over 100 computers.
The new facility will be located one block west of Swinton across from the=20
Tennis Center. Construction is scheduled to begin in April and the grand=20
opening is slated for May or June of 2005. The total budget is $14.6 millio=
n. =20
Additional funds are needed, so if you wish to make a donation to the Delray=
Beach=20
Public Library Capital Campaign, contact John Callahan at 266-0194. Thanks,=20
John, for the update on what will surely be a wonderful addition to our city=
! =20
=20
Fred Runkel held the winning ticket for the Green Hat but was unsuccessful a=
t=20
finding the elusive Ace of Spades. =20
Next week=E2=80=99s program: Mike King of the Palm Beach County Parks and R=
ecreation=20
Department will speak on prohibited plants.
And finally, by popular demand, here is the poem presented by Egon at last=20
week=E2=80=99s meeting. Enjoy and have a great week!
=20
SHOOTING EIGHTY
I am the very model of an octogenarian
The rarest of all breeds, a golfing non sectarian.
I eat the flesh of beast and fowl,
I=E2=80=99m not a vegetarian
And sometimes I use awful words,
I=E2=80=99m not a seminarian.
I rise each day at break of dawn,
The world whirls madly round my head.
Pain runs up and down my limbs=20
Which signifies that I=E2=80=99m not dead.
I smash those golf balls with great glee,
I limp around fairway and rough.
I keep my pill box close to me,
Because I=E2=80=99m living on the stuff.
As now my years are full four score,
And since my joints are often sore,
It is much easier I find
To sound off and to speak my mind.
I say to you all gathered here,
I speak frankly, It=E2=80=99s my right,
Keep on golfing, live it up,
Do not go gently into night.
Egon Kurz
