Rotary Ramblings
February 10, 2004

President Mark Denkler did double duty today presiding over the early mornin=
g=20
Board Meeting as well as our regular luncheon meeting. We=E2=80=99re keepin=
g you=20
busy, Mark!

It deserves to be noted that Bruce Williams received many compliments from=20
our members at the Board Meeting. We are so fortunate to have such a talent=
ed=20
presence at our meetings each week. This afternoon, to the delight of the B=
aby=20
Boomers, Bruce played a selection of Beatle tunes while we dined, in=20
commemoration of their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show 40 years ago. Bru=
ce, you=20
get top marks!      =20

Valentine=E2=80=99s Day is fast approaching so Ron Backer=E2=80=99s heart-wa=
rming invocation=20
included a special tribute to our "Valentines". =20

No song leaders were available so in keeping with the Valentine's theme,=20
Bruce led us in a "heart rendering" rendition of "Let Me Call You Sweetheart=
". =20
Birthday greetings were sung to Mike Zin, a visiting Rotarian from Windsor,=20
Ontario.

Fred Bonardi gave some encouragement to investors with his stock market=20
report, but generally, it was a quiet day on Wall Street. Tomorrow, Alan Gr=
eenspan=20
gives his "State of the Economy" address to Congress so that should liven up=
=20
a tired market.

The always distinguished Harvey Brown greeted and introduced our guests and=20
visiting Rotarians. Bill Talen donated our banner which was presented to Al=
=20
Smith of Chesterbrook, Pennsylvania. Al is past president of his 40-member=20
club. Harold Burd, our "snowbird" from Washington, New Jersey brought us a=20=
banner=20
from his club. =20

And our equally distinguished Sergeant-at-Arms, Ernie Simon, had an active=20
day collecting dollars for scholars. Today=E2=80=99s special was "Happy Val=
entine=E2=80=99s=20
Day" which brought many donations. Art Nejame contributed $36.00 for his 36=
=20
years in Rotary. John Callahan gave $5.00 for his photo appearing in the=20
newspaper. And we got a "news flash" when Pat Archer announced that she just=
 learned=20
she is running un-opposed for City Commission and therefore has been=20
re-elected.  Congratulations, Pat!  That news was well-worth a $5.00 contrib=
ution!  =20
Lots of AWOLS and leaving early folks brought the grand total to $132.00. G=
reat=20
job!

Mark announced that there will be a wine tasting party on Saturday, March 6t=
h=20
from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Old School Square. Tickets are $45.00.
 =20
Today=E2=80=99s program was President-elect Bill Adams who spoke of his inte=
resting=20
weekend at the Sea Camp in Big Pine Key. Bill and his wife, Charlotte,=20
accompanied the four Rotary Exchange Students from District 6930 to the camp=
.  Their=20
weekend included a tour of the facility, a dance, a boat trip to a reef in t=
he=20
Gulf of Mexico for snorkeling and lots of educational programs. Sounds like=
=20
you had a fun time, Bill. Keep up the good work! =20

Leo Phillips held the winning ticket for the Green Hat, but the jackpot=20
continues to grow. Better luck next time, Leo!

Our scholarship fund received an unexpected "windfall" after the meeting whe=
n=20
Harold Burd made a contribution of $54.00 in honor of his 54 years in Rotary=
.=20
 Thanks, Harold and congratulations on your milestone! =20

Lyn Huckle left flyers on all of the tables promoting the First Presbyterian=
=20
Church Rummage Sale on February 13th and 14th from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at 33=
=20
Gleason Street in Delray Beach. Regie Moorcroft organizes this wonderful ev=
ent=20
and there are bargains galore for everyone.

Michael Caldwell, a former member of the Coral Springs Rotary Club and a=20
visitor at today=E2=80=99s meeting is being published for membership. Micha=
el is a=20
banker. =20
  =20
Next week=E2=80=99s program: Rotarian Dick Dickson will speak on the Stamp=20
Fellowship and other fellowship programs done through Rotary.

Happy Valentine=E2=80=99s Day to all!
