Rotary Ramblings
February 17, 2004
Our snowbirds are with us so there were few empty chairs at today=E2=80=99s=20=
meeting. =20
Great to have you back! We were reminded that today was our last meeting of=
=20
Rotary=E2=80=99s 99th year history. That=E2=80=99s right -- next week we b=
egin the 52 week=20
countdown to Rotary=E2=80=99s 100th anniversary!
President Mark Denkler presided over this milestone meeting. Ernie Simon=20
delivered the invocation, and Jimmy Weatherspoon, with the help of Bruce=20
Williams, led us in song. Birthday greetings were sung to Egon Kurz who is=20=
looking=20
great at 87. Our guests and visiting Rotarians were introduced and welcomed=
by=20
Bruce Wenzel.
Tony Allerton did a great job raising $115.00 as Sergeant-at-Arms. Jon Simo=
n=20
gave $3.00 in honor of his son and his friend from Long Island who visited=20
our meeting today. The special of the day was "No Snow in Delray Beach Just=20=
For=20
Today." Tony also collected dollars from members who forgot to wear their=20
pins. The banner was donated by Art Nejame but was not given away.
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett reported that the market was up again. January was a=20
"flatish" month but in February the overall numbers are looking good.
Georgina also took the opportunity to remind us of several upcoming=20
fund-raisers. The wine-tasting party on Saturday March 6th is a wonderful o=
pportunity=20
to educate yourself on wine. Wine-tasting doesn=E2=80=99t mean getting into=
xicated. =20
You take a sip of the various wines but you don=E2=80=99t have to swallow. =20=
The event=20
takes place from 6-8:00 p.m. in the Ocean Breeze Room, Crest Theatre. Ticke=
ts=20
were mailed to all members, so if you do not plan to use your tickets, try t=
o=20
find someone else who would like to attend.
Mark announced that Bingo Night will be on Thursday, March 25th so circle th=
e=20
date for this fun event. The Delray Affair, our biggest fund-raiser of the=20
year will be the weekend of April 16-19. And for those interested in learni=
ng=20
more about digital photography, Art Nejame will hold a class on the subject=20=
at=20
the Palm Beach Photographic Center on Saturday, April 3rd. The cost is=20
$50.00 and all proceeds will go to our Rotary club. Art=E2=80=99s wife, Fat=
ima, is=20
donating her time and effort teaching the class. Only 100 slots are availab=
le in the=20
class so register early.
Bill Adams introduced today=E2=80=99s speaker, Richard "Dick" Dickson, a ret=
ired=20
clergyman, printer, and Rotarian from Irvington, Virginia. Accompanying Dic=
k was=20
his wife, Liz, who helped him with his presentation on the Rotary On Stamps=20
program.
Dick, a Rotarian since 1966 and past-president of his club, is an avid stamp=
=20
collector. Rotary International has more than 75 fellowships of Rotarians=20=
of=20
like interests, and Rotary On Stamps (ROS) is one of the most active of thes=
e=20
"Fellowships." Its nearly 200 members are from over 30 countries. =20
The group was organized after a large number of stamps were issued in 1955 t=
o=20
celebrate Rotary International=E2=80=99s 50th Anniversary. Dick showed us p=
ictures=20
of stamps from his collection. The stamps came from all over the world and=20
depicted local Rotary service projects, the evolution of the Rotary wheel, a=
nd=20
the Polio Plus theme. Dick says that collecting the Rotary commemorative sta=
mps=20
has been a meaningful experience for him and a great way to connect with=20
Rotarians throughout the world. Unfortunately, the U.S. Postal Service will=
not be=20
issuing a commemorative stamp for Rotary=E2=80=99s 100th anniversary. =20
One of Dick=E2=80=99s prized possessions is a postcard that was mailed from=20=
Japan and=20
addressed to the Rotary Club of Delray Beach. He also has a card from the=20
personal stamp collection of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Thanks, Dick, for an=20
interesting program.=20
Next week=E2=80=99s program: Jacqueline Muniz of the Children=E2=80=99s Ser=
vices Council=20
will speak on their programs.
Jon Simon held the winning ticket for the Green Hat.
Enjoy your week!
