Rotary Ramblings
February 24, 2004
It was another gorgeous day in Delray, and as our members flocked to our=20
meeting they were greeted with friendly hugs from Lyn Huckle. President Mark=
=20
Denkler called the meeting to order and Joyce Lunsford gave the invocation.=20=
=20
Leading the chorus today was Wally Doud, who was celebrating a birthday. Al=
so=20
turning a year older (but looking ever so youthful!) were Bruce Galloway and=
=20
Shirley Clark. Best wishes to all for a wonderful year!=20
Harvey Brown stepped to the podium to introduce our visiting Rotarians and=20
guests. He encouraged everyone to attend the wine tasting party on March 6th=
=20
from 6-8:00 p.m. in the Ocean Breeze Room of the Crest Theatre at Old School=
=20
Square.
The banner was donated by Fred Runkel, and he came forward to present it to=20
Scott McDuffee, a visiting Rotarian from Merrimack, New Hampshire. Come bac=
k=20
and visit us soon, Scott!
The Wall Street report came from Fred Bonardi. Fred also brought greetings=20
from Jim Atchinson who apparently is waiting for his home to be ready. At F=
red=E2=80=99
s urging, we gave a round of applause to Tony Allerton for the stellar job h=
e=20
does as Sergeant-at-Arms. Tony collected $147.00 today from our generous=20
members. Way to go!
We were delighted to welcome our Student of the Month, Eva Luo, a senior at=20
Atlantic Community High School. If she looked familiar that is because Eva=20
visited us several months ago when she came to speak to our club about her v=
isit=20
to Japan with the Delray Beach Sister Cities Youth Ambassadors. Eva is an=20
amazing young woman who is a honors student and has a 5.0 GPA. She plans=20=
to go=20
to medical school would like to pursue a career in cancer research. Eva=20
selected Patricia Kelly, her guidance counselor, to be honored with her as T=
eacher=20
of the Month. It was obvious that both student and teacher had a mutual=20
respect for one another.
=20
Bill Adams introduced today=E2=80=99s program, Beach Superintendent Bob Tayl=
or and=20
Assistant Parks and Recreation Director Rich Connell, who gave a multi-media=
=20
presentation on Delray Beach Ocean Rescue.
Delray=E2=80=99s beach patrol provides year-round public safety to over one=20=
million=20
visitors annually on our municipal beach. The Division is one of 34 in the=20
United States certified by the United States Lifesaving Association as an Ad=
vanced=20
"Open Water" Lifeguard Agency. All 30 members of the staff are State of=20
Florida certified Emergency Medical Technicians. The ocean lifeguards parti=
cipate=20
in hundreds of hours of physical training each year in addition to CPR, wate=
r=20
skills and medical training.
The Ocean Rescue Division=E2=80=99s public outreach programs include Ocean A=
wareness=20
classes which are given to civic organizations and local schools, and a Juni=
or=20
Lifeguard program for youth ages 11-17. Each year, Delray Ocean Rescue host=
s=20
an Ocean Mile Swim event that brings over 300 people from all over the=20
country to our beach for the competition.
Bob also informed us of the wide variety of recreational opportunities=20
available at Pompey Park such as the computer lab, tennis lessons and swimmi=
ng=20
lessons. Thanks, Bob and Rich, for an excellent program! =20
Just a reminder that Art Nejame will hold a class on digital photography at=20
the Palm Beach Photographic Center on Saturday, April 3rd from 9:00 a.m.- 1:=
00=20
p.m. The four hour lecture and seminar will teach you how to control digita=
l=20
photography from the camera to the computer. Equipment, software and=20
techniques for successful digital photography will be covered. It will also=
cover all=20
of the basic concepts of digital photography, including: digital camera=20
features, proper set-up, pixel resolution for different end uses, file forma=
ts, the=20
advantages of RAW files, digital media, and storage devices. If you have no=
=20
idea what any of that means, then you are a prime candidate for the class. =20
The cost is $50.00 and all proceeds will go to our Rotary club to benefit lo=
cal=20
projects. Art=E2=80=99s wife, Fatima, is donating her time to teach the clas=
s. To=20

Cam Fecher held the winning ticket for the Green Hat. The pot continues to=20
grow, so be sure to buy some tickets next week! You could be the lucky winn=
er!

presented by local author Alexander "Sandy" Simon, Jr.
Best wishes to all for a wonderful week. =20
