    ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
March 2, 2004

Today was a typical, lovely, South Florida day, as March comes breezing in.
President Mark Denkler presided over a full house of Rotarians. Candace
Etzler gave an eloquent invocation. Wally Doud led the happy crowd in singing. Of
course, Bruce Williams was up to his usual self, entertaining us royally.
Wally thought he would be spared our singing "Happy Birthday" to him. (He was
wrong!)

Don't quite know what was up with Bruce Wenzel; he was welcoming a group of
invisible Rotarians. He did, however, welcome many visible ones. He also
recognized the "snowbird" members. Arthur Reef had as his guest, Don Learch.

REMINDER: Wine Tasting Party, Saturday March 6, 2004; 6:00-8:00 p.m. Old
School Square, Ocean Breeze Room, 51 N. Swinton Ave. This is our second annual
wine tasting party. This year, it is commemorating the 99th Anniversary of
Rotary International. Let's all support this fundraiser for our club. For more
information, call Georgina 276-1640. (Each member was issued two tickets @
$45.00 each.) The public is invited.

Sergeant at Arms Roy Simon, collected a whopping $161.00 today; thanks to
Wally Doud having a birthday. Kurt Godfrey paid for a banner that he could not
give away. Fred Runkel tried to win the ace of spades today; now the jackpot
is in access of $550.00. Next week, you have a chance to win!

Emmett Gumm inducted a new member today (using the long version), Rev. Roger
Richardson, Pastor at Church of the Palms. He is the replacement pastor at
Church of the Palms, for retired Rev. Jim Atchison. It is only fitting that he
should also replace him as a member of our club. We welcome you, and look
forward to "working with you." Candace Etzler was his sponsor.

Dave O'Connell reminded everyone about "Paint Up Delray," on March 27, 7:00
to noon. He needs about 10-12 Rotarians to help paint a house. This is a
great way to let everyone know we do "service above self." Even if you cannot
paint, you can serve coffee, and give moral support.

Bill Adams had the pleasure of introducing our guest speaker. ( He looked an
awfully lot like a couple of our members.) He was none other than Sandy
Simon, younger (notorious) brother of Ernie and Roy Simon. As most of you know, in
1993, Sandy suffered a massive stroke, ending his career as a land developer.
As he was recovering, and he is amazingly recovering, he wrote a book called
Remembering. It gives detailed information on South Palm Beach County,
specifically Delray Beach, where he was born and grew up. Then, he wrote a book
called A Stroke of Genius. This book is a first hand account of life after
experiencing a stroke. This book is being used as a text book in many medical
schools across the country. Then, the town of Highland Beach commissioned him to
write a book about their town; thus the name The Amazing Story of Highland
Beach/8,000 Years of Change. Sandy has incorporated his humor, research of
historical facts, and a bit of fiction into this interesting book. He has so much
to tell us, that we don't have enough time in one meeting to hear it all. It
took Sandy three years to research and write this book. Many, many days,
after eating at The Green Owl, he spent his afternoons at our library doing
research. (Wonder how many parking tickets he got.) He generously donated partial
proceeds from his books sales today to our Rotary Club. Sandy, we thank you
for your generosity. For those of you who wish you had bought his book today,
to find out "the rest of the story," I have his information.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Thursday, March 25, 2004, BINGO PARTY! It will be at Ellie's
Flamingo Room. I will tell you more about it next week. But, mark your
calendar now!

Next Tuesday morning, 7:30 a.m. will be our monthly board of directors
meeting. It is always held in Ellie's Marilyn Room. All members are invited and
urged to attend.

Next week: Our guest speaker will be Jacqueline Muniz, Public Information
Specialist with Children's Services Council of Palm Beach County.
