ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
March 16, 2004

The rain that fell on Delray Beach at noon today did not dampen the spirits
of the Delray Beach Rotary Club. The only thing missing was the beautiful
music of Bruce Williams; but, Wally Doud still did a great job leading us
acappella. President Mark Denkler presided over a full house again today. Leo
Phillips gave a lovely invocation.

We sang Happy Birthday to Georgina Kerr-Jarrett's friend, Nancy Genser. Dave
O'Connell paid for a banner he could not give away. (The same group of
visitors keep coming back; good sign.)

Harvey Brown greeted all the visitors; even announced he and Dave Harden did
make ups, keeping our club among the top in attendance.

Georgina Kerr-Jarrett did a little "dancing" about the stock market, stating
we are enduring a very volatile week; trying to digest the growth. She was
very gracious with her "thank you's" for the participation with the success of
the Wine Tasting Fundraiser. She also mentioned our next big fundraiser. It
is the wonderful seminar on learning the basics of digital photography, being
presented and sponsored by Palm Beach Photographic Center; taught by Fatima
NeJame. All proceeds benefit Rotary Fund of Delray Beach. Event date: Saturday,
April 3, 2004, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Only $50.00 per person. Seating is
limited; call Georgina 276-1640, or Mark 276-6570.

Dave O'Connell reminded us of Paint Up Delray; coming up March 27, 7:00 a.m.
to noon. He needs three to four more people to sign up for this. He assures
us that a professional painter will be available to help guide you through
painting the house. It's good practice, to learn on someone else's house before
doing your own.

Sergeant at Arms Ernie Simon collected a total of $138.00 today. Candace
Etzler was very generous today, giving money for her son and husband's birthdays,
and also $10.00 for ten years in Rotary. Mert Anderson gave $40.00 in honor
of Jim Blocker, our computer "genius." We are very fortunate to have Jim in
our midst.

Our President-elect, Bill Adams spent this past weekend at a Rotary Training
Seminar. His comments were he enjoyed, and learned much. He brought news of
the upcoming Rotary Conference District 6930, October 8-11, 2004. Cruising on
the "Sovereign of the Seas" from Port Canaveral to Nassau and Cococay,
Bahamas. Celebrate Rotary's Centennial by joining on a Cruise with fellow Rotarians
from our District. More information can be obtained from Bill. In the
upcoming weeks, I will provide more information also.

Jon Simon was holding the winning ticket, to draw from the deck today. Since
he did not win, the "green hat" holds over $600.00 at this time.

Bill Adams introduced our guest speaker today; Donald G. Lerch, Jr. Mr.
Lerch lives part-time in Rockville, MD, and part-time in Delray Beach. He has
been a guest of Arthur Reef, at our meetings many times. He has a background of
radio talk show host, being heard from Maine to Florida. He later formed a
company, working with Energy. He has a very colorful background in this field.
He has lobbied with the Agriculture Users Conference; traveled the world
over, working in the capacity of "world energy."

Energy is an emotional subject. Will gas prices go higher? 57% of our oil
is imported; nearest suppliers are Canada, Mexico and Venezuela. The US has
not built a new refinery in 50 years. Other countries are building refineries
at warp speed, therefore encouraging companies to move from the US, to where
production is less expensive.

Mr. Lerch stated it is up to the citizens to change policies governing our
supply of oil and natural gas. He ended on a note that Agriculture is given a
10 billion subsidy to produce corn; their motto is: "Drink the Best, Drive the
Rest." Mr. Lerch gave so many astounding facts, but space does not permit
printing all of them. His advice was: "We have to make choices." Perhaps we
can persuade him to speak again, more in depth on what some of our choices are.

Next week: I know most of our members have been awaiting the return of our
guest speaker, Harvey Oyer, III, a renowned historian. When Bill Adams informed
me Mr. Oyer was our speaker, he related how he has been trying for many months
to schedule him; he is so busy, it took months to do so. He has spoken to us
before, relating some very interesting historical facts about South Florida;
specifically Palm Beach County. He will be giving us updates on some of the
restoration work being done around West Palm Beach.

Words to Ponder:

"What we say matters. It either enhances the situation or detracts from it.
It's seldom neutral.

We should guard well the words we send out, for they can never really be
taken back.

Make sure what you say serves. If what you say doesn't serve, don't say it.

SPEAK ONLY WITH GOOD PURPOSE!"
