Rotary Ramblings
March 23, 2004

President Mark Denkler presided over another delightful Rotary meeting while=
=20
Jimmy Weatherspoon did double duty leading us in prayer and in song. Belate=
d=20
birthday greetings were sung to Jim Pignato whose birthday slipped by us in=20
February. We also sang our good wishes to Bill and Charlotte Adams who are=20
celebrating 29 years of marriage. =20

Thanks to Steve Rich for doing such a wonderful job greeting our visiting=20
Rotarians and guests. Nancy King presented our banner to Shirlee Sherman of=
=20
Belleville, New Jersey. Shirlee brought us a banner from her club and told=20=
us=20
about their "Gift of Life" program which helps children from all over the wo=
rld=20
who have heart related problems.

Georgina Kerr-Jarrett reported that the Dow was up when she left the office=20
so she was trying to remain optimistic. She cautioned that the recent acts=20=
of=20
terrorism have been "spooking" the stock market so, as always, the market is=
=20
being unpredictable.

Today=E2=80=99s special category "Spring Is Sprung", as well as generous=20
contributions from birthday boy Jim Pignato, our anniversary celebrant Bill=20=
Adams, and a=20
roll of pennies from Andy Hall, all helped Sergeant-at-Arms Roy Simon raise=20
$177.50.  Way to go! =20

Just a reminder that "Paint Up Delray" takes place this Saturday, March 27th=
=20
beginning at 7:00 a.m. Ten houses in the southwest area of Delray Beach wil=
l=20
be painted. Call Dave O=E2=80=99Connell at 391-4970, if you would like to l=
end your=20
hands.

Mark also announced that a class on digital photography will be held at the=20
Palm Beach Photographic Centre to benefit our club. Fatima Nejame, Executiv=
e=20
Director of the Centre, will teach the class on Saturday, April 3rd from 9:0=
0=20
a.m.- 1:00 p.m. The four hour lecture and seminar will teach you how to cont=
rol=20
digital photography from the camera to the computer. Equipment, software an=
d=20
techniques for successful digital photography will be covered. It will also=
=20
cover all of the basic concepts of digital photography, including: digital=20
camera features, proper set-up, pixel resolution for different end uses, fil=
e=20
formats, the advantages of RAW files, digital media, and storage devices. Th=
e=20
cost is $50.00 and all proceeds will go to the Rotary Fund. Call Mark or=20
Georgina for tickets.=20
=20
Before introducing today=E2=80=99s speaker, Bill Adams announced that the Di=
strict=20
6930 conference will be held October 8-11th on board a cruise ship. If you=
 are=20
interested in attending the conference, Bill has more information. Space=20
fills up quickly, so try to submit your application by the end of March.

Today's program was presented by Harvey Oyer III, President of the Historica=
l=20
Society of Palm Beach County. Harvey told us about the efforts that are=20
underway to restore the Palm Beach County Courthouse that was built in 1916.=
 =20
About 85% of the original building is still there and the project is expecte=
d to=20
take about 2 =C2=BD years to complete. When it is done, the four story build=
ing will=20
house county government offices and a public history museum The building,=20
located in downtown West Palm Beach, will be surrounded by a public park.=20

The project has also included creating a comprehensive history program=20
targeted at fourth grade students. The program=E2=80=99s video, textbook and=
 web based=20
training captures the entire history of Florida and Palm Beach County. Its=20
curriculum serves as a benchmark for other similar programs throughout the S=
tate of=20
Florida. Harvey distributed copies of the textbook which is in a newspaper=20
format and filled with information on Florida=E2=80=99s rich history. =20=
=20

Next week=E2=80=99s program: Bob Weill, a kidney recipient, will speak on o=
rgan=20
donation.

Ernie Simon held the winning ticket for the Green Hat. The lucky card wasn=
=E2=80=99t=20
picked, so be sure to get your tickets next week! The pot continues to grow=
.

Have a great week!
