ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
March 30, 2004
Looks like March is marching on; it's almost April, which means Passover,
Easter and the Delray Affair (in that order). It's a busy time for all, but we
are looking forward to each.
President Mark Denkler (counting his tenure) led another great meeting. A
lovely invocation was given by Steve Bates. Steve Rich followed up, leading us
in some of our favorite patriotic songs. Bruce Williams, what can I say?
Your music is heavenly!
We sang Happy Birthday to Sam Altdoerffer, who donated $78.00 to our club; we
sang Happy Birthday to George Kientzy; and a special congratulations to Egon
and Elsie Kurz for 65 wonderful years together. That is so special and rare
in this day. The best to all of you.
Harvey Brown greeted two visiting Rotarians. Lyn Huckle paid $5.00 for a
banner she could not give away. Make ups were done by Lyn Huckle and John Arnold
(aboard the same ship----?); also, Mert Anderson, Dave Harden and Harvey
Brown. Thanks to each of you for your make ups. We won't mention names of too
many AWOL's (this time).
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave the stock market report, stating: " the market is
a bit wishy washy at this time."
Tony Allerton, Sergeant at Arms, collected a whopping $224.00 today. A
majority of that was attributed to Sam Altdoerffer, George Kientzy and Egon Kurz,
with their special occasions.
Paint up Delray was a very successful Rotary event. Dave O'Connell does a
terrific job heading up this project each year. He noted that our newest
member, Michael Caldwell and his sons were out there helping out. We thank each of
you for your efforts. I will give you the complete list next week.
REMINDER: APRIL 3, 9:00-1:00: Digital Photography Seminar, Palm Beach Photo
Museum, Second Avenue; Fatima NeJame, instructor. All proceeds go to our
Rotary Club.
Today, Shirley Clark presented our Student of The Month, Brett Kinley. Brett
is a bright young lady, with an educational objective to study and pursue a
degree in the medical field. She is a senior at Atlantic High School. She is
quite a scholar, being a member of National Honor Society (4 years), Spanish
National Honor Society, as well as quite an athlete. Some of her awards are:
Most Valuable Player (Tennis); Coach's Award (Tennis); Most Valuable Player
(Volleyball); Eagles for Excellence, to name a few. She is the daughter of proud
parents, Mickey and Gerri Kinley, who were beaming at her presentation today.
She chose as her Teacher of the Month, none other than "Coach" Chris Wotton.
He told us he is moving on as Assistant Principal of a school in Boca Raton.
As most of you know, "Coach" has been the recipient of this award about 6-7n
times now. He sure is doing something right with these young people. This
is a very special man!
Bill Adams reminded us of our District Conference, October 9-11, aboard a
cruise ship. If this is something you would like to do, please see Bill for
details.
Bill Adams introduced our guest speaker, Lloyd Weill. He spoke on Organ
Donation. This is very dear to Mr. Weill, since he is a kidney recipient, since
May 26, 1996. He explained how he received the kidney of a 17 year old girl, a
stranger. This has allowed Mr. Weill to prolong a productive life, enjoying
his family. He told us that in the U.S. alone, there are 89,345 people
awaiting organs; with 1,100 of these being children.
The seven organs are: (2) Kidneys; Pancreas; Liver; (2) Lungs; and Heart. Of
course, time is of essence, when donation can be accepted. He concluded with
this quote: Don't take your organs to Heaven; Heaven knows we need them here."
Our friend, Reverend Andy Hall is leaving us for a few months. He has
promised to return late Fall. We enjoy his wit and wisdom, and are always sad to
see him go.
Mark your calendar: April 3, Digital Photography Seminar; April 16, 17, 18,
Delray Affair; May 6, Bingo Party.
Next week's speaker TBA!
