Rotary Ramblings
April 6, 2004
Early arrivals at today=E2=80=99s meeting were entertained by delightful ren=
ditions=20
of seasonal music ranging from "Here Comes Peter Cottontail" to "Easter Para=
de"=20
beautifully played by our own Bruce Williams. As one visitor commented, "He=
=E2=80=99
s the best piano player of any Rotary Club." We agree!=20
The Honorable Mark Denkler called our meeting to order and Nancy King=20
delivered the invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon led us in singing our favorite=
Rotary=20
songs.
=20
Bruce Wenzel welcomed our guests and visiting Rotarians. Bruce noted that=20
the number of visitors has decreased (the snowbirds have flown north) but th=
e=20
quality is still there. Mert Anderson presented our banner to Sam Heard of=20
Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He returned the gesture by giving us a banner from hi=
s club=20
which is a 100% Paul Harris Club. Aloha, Sam! Come back soon!
None of our stockbrokers were on hand to give us a market report, which made=
=20
many of us feel uneasy. Hopefully no news is good news!
Candace Etzler did an amazing job as Sergeant-at-Arms raising $138.00. Elli=
e=20
Lowery couldn=E2=80=99t attend the entire digital photography seminar but do=
nated=20
$20.00 for the time she was there. Bruce Wenzel=E2=80=99s picture was spott=
ed in the=20
newspaper so he paid for his notoriety. Sizable contributions also came fro=
m=20
John Arnold, who is looking forward to hunting Easter eggs with his grandchi=
ldren=20
in Atlanta, and from our visiting Canadian Mike Zinn, who wished us all a=20
great summer. Today=E2=80=99s specials, "Think Delray Affair!" and "Easter=20
Greetings/Happy Passover" also brought in generous contributions.
Special thanks to Art Nejame and his wife, Fatima, for the wonderful job the=
y=20
did with the digital photography workshop. Everyone had a good time and=20
learned a lot. Not only was it an excellent class, our club will benefit fr=
om the=20
$1,500.00 that was raised! Art proudly mentioned that there was a grant=20
review of the 125 county cultural organizations and the Palm Beach Photograp=
hic=20
Centre was rated the #1 cultural organization in Palm Beach County. =20
Congratulations!=20
Mark reminded everyone to sign up to sell hotdogs and soft drinks at the=20
Delray Affair, April 16-18. Also, be sure to save the date of Thursday, May=
6th=20
for our annual Bingo Night.
Sister Cities of Delray Beach will hold a golf tournament on Saturday, May=20
8th at the Delray Beach Golf Club. The cost is $75.00 per player or hole=20
sponsorships are available for $100.00. All proceeds benefit the Sister Cit=
ies=20
Student Exchange Program. Flyers were available on all of the tables but in=
case=20
you forgot to pick one up, you can call 243-7011 for more information or to=20
sign up.
There will be a Board Meeting next Tuesday, 7:30 a.m. at Ellie=E2=80=99s Din=
er. =20
Before introducing today=E2=80=99s speaker, Bill Adams announced that the Ro=
tary=20
Exchange Program is considering hosting another student from Brazil. If you=
are=20
interested in being a host family, contact Bill.
Walking is our most basic and earliest form of transportation but it can be=20
dangerous. According to our guest speaker, Joy Riddell, every four minutes=20=
a=20
pedestrian or bicyclist is killed in the United States. Joy=E2=80=99s Power=
Point=20
presentation provided our members with some useful tips on how to keep safe=20=
when=20
walking.
Joy is the Florida Pedestrian Safety Coordinator at Florida Atlantic=20
University. She explained that traffic issues are approached through educat=
ion,=20
enforcement (getting the police involved), engineering (installing traffic c=
alming=20
devices and better street lights), and encouragement. =20
Joy was highly complimentary toward Delray Beach for the marvelous job the=20
city has done making it pedestrian friendly. She said that she often uses o=
ur=20
city as an example when she is explaining the right way to get things done.=20=
=20
She stressed the importance of developing mobility options because as the=20
population in Florida gets older more busses and improved mass transit will=20=
be=20
needed so that seniors will be able to give up their driver=E2=80=99s licens=
es but still be=20
able to leave their homes. Thanks, Joy, for an excellent program! =20
Candace Etzler, a first-time ticket buyer, held the winning ticket for the=20
Green Hat. Congratulations and better luck next time!=20
Next week: Nancy Distler will present a program on acupuncture. We will be=
=20
waiting on pins and needles for that one! Ouch!
Enjoy your week and your Easter or Passover! =20
