ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
April 20, 2004

Today was yet another lovely Spring Day in Delray. We are still celebrating
the success of our Rotary Club participation in the Delray Affair! As soon as
we get the final count on our proceeds, it will be passed along. Many, many
of our fine members, including new members and snowbirds, were out helping in
the booth, selling hot dogs and drinks, raising funds for Atlantic High School
Scholarship Fund. (Of course, some of us were "chief cooks" until we ran out
of gas and hot dogs; timing was good!) President Mark Denkler announced in
our meeting today, that in past years, the members who were unable to help at
the Delray Affair should donate $10.00 to the fund. He was the leader; gaining
a total of $80.00.

Today, our invocation was given by Harvey Brown (quite eloquently). Our song
leader was Steve Rich, doing a good job. I would be remiss if I did not
mention the lovely songs Bruce Williams had us all (mentally) dancing to.

We sang Happy Birthday to Joyce Lunsford who belies her age; also to Art
NeJame. Joyce donated $80.00; Art donated $60.00. We also sang Happy Anniversary
to Jim Pignato (and Frances); Kurt Godfrey and his wife.  Jim donated $58.00;
Kurt donated $5.00. We wish all of you the very best, and thank you for your
generosity.

Bruce Wenzel welcomed six visiting Rotarians; said good-bye to some of our
snowbirds; noted that Kurt Godfrey gave $5.00 for a banner that he could not
give away. Bruce also gave a brief summary of when and how the Delray Affair
began in the early 60's, with 25 vendors; today it is close to 700 vendors. Our
own John Bordeman, Delray Beach Rotary President 1968-69 was the "father" of
The Delray Affair. Bruce, thanks for the history lesson.

Fred Bonardi "worked" the stock market report. His comment was: "the market
is taking a break."

Roy Simon, Sergeant at Arms, collected a whopping $600.00 today. With Joyce
and Art's birthday contributions; Kurt and Jim Pignato's anniversaries; Pat
Archer's picture in newspaper ($5.00); Harvey Brown contributed $25.00 for the
Delray Affair, this sure added to the total. We also had Dave Richards parking
cars for the Delray Affair, bringing in a whopping $120.00, to our scholarship
fund. Dave, we thank you for your efforts! We also had Bernie Shapiro
donating money on behalf of Egon Kurz's many contributions to the club.

Gay Vela donated $14.00 today, for the birth of her granddaughter, Angelique
DeGay Vela, born April 14, 2004, carrying on the family name. She's one proud
grandma!

Bev Bowra, donated money to tell the club how he has enjoyed being with our
club this season. He's heading back to Burlington, Canada for the summer.

There was so much fundraising going on today, I could not "copy" it all.
There was Lyn Huckle, "hawking" doughnuts at the meeting; raising $10.00 from
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett. That's how we raised $600.00 today!

We also honored our Student of the Month today, Joshua Lerman; presented by
Mert Anderson. Mert read a long list of achievements for this young man, that
should have been achieved by someone at least twice his age! Joshua will be
graduating from Atlantic High School this year, and hopes to be attending
Georgia Tech (this sure perked up Roy Simon's ears; his alma mater). As well as
excelling academically, he is an accomplished musician, playing trumpet in AHS
Band, winning top awards there. He is involved in community projects, as well
as a work resume. Josh is in the top 5% of the 2004 Class. We salute this
outstanding young man.

Joshua chose as his Teacher of the Month, Elizabeth Zappolo. She has been
teaching at Atlantic High School for sixteen years. She teaches "Theory of
Knowledge." She had nothing but praise for her outstanding student, Joshua
Lerman.

President Mark Denkler introduced our guest speaker, Suzie DeBusk. Mrs.
DeBusk shared with us, pictures and stories of her nine safaris to Africa. She
noted they were offbeat safaris; riding horseback up to nine and one half hours
daily. These trips usually last 10-14 days. She showed us pictures of the
group galloping with the animals, through Kenya and Tanzania. At the beginning,
they are lodged in a large two story 1920's house with 60 acres. It was a
lovely view. Then, she showed us how they stayed in tents, showered daily in
portable shower tents; ate dinner in tents, or outdoors, the rest of the trip.
She told of many exciting experiences with the wild animals of Africa. She
returned only a few days ago; sounds like she's quite eager to go again soon!

REMEMBER: Our last fundraiser for this year is Rotary Bingo Night; May 6,
2004; 6:30 p. m.; Ellie's Flamingo Room; BE THERE!
