ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
April 27, 2004
More and more of our "Snowbird" members are migrating north. However, we had
about six visiting Rotarians with us today, who were welcomed by Harvey Brown.
(By the way, did you note Harvey's necktie? He has donated it for our
Silent Auction next week at Bingo. You must be there to bid on it.)
President Mark Denkler led another fine meeting. Jim Pignato gave a lovely
invocation, remembering our Tony Allerton in his prayer, who is ailing just
now. Tony, get well and hurry back, we are all rooting for you.
Jim Weatherspoon was back today, leading the singing acappella. Bruce
Williams, where are you? Things are just not the same without you!
We sang Happy Anniversary to Dave Richards. He and Linda are celebrating 30
years, for which he gave $30.00 to our fund. Dave and Linda, we wish you the
best.
John Arnold had his son, Jim, visiting from Minneapolis. Kurt Godfrey gave
$20.00, honoring his daughter's graduation from college. Lyn Huckle tried
again to give a banner, but there were no first time visitors.
Fred Bonardi gave a real "upbeat" stock market report; stating the market is
up today.
Sergeant at Arms Ernie Simon, trying to compete with brother Roy's record of
last week as Sergeant at Arms, fell short a few dollars. Harvey Brown had
just told us of his amazing kidney removal last winter. We were all so amazed,
that members donated "dollars" in his honor, bringing our total earnings for
today to $153.00.
We did quite well with our participation in the Delray Affair. Today,
President Denkler announced that we netted $6,400.00 for our scholarship fund.
Again, thanks go out to all those who worked so hard to make this year another
success, and especially to Steve Bates, who chaired this fundraiser.
Marilyn Ochs is again asking for a family to host an Exchange Student. If
you, or anyone you know might be interested, please contact her. Bill and
Charlotte Adams have done a terrific job hosting our current student, Letitia.
Egon Kurz, with his long strip of tickets, won the honor of drawing from the
deck today. Since he did not pick the Ace of Spades, the pot is now over
$750.00. Egon, you just increased my odds!
REMINDER: Our last fundraiser for 2003-2004 is our Bingo Party/Dinner/Silent
Auction, May 6, 6:30 p.m., Ellie's Flamingo Room; be there! For those of you
that have already donated auction items, we thank you; for those of you that
have not, please help us out. The more items we have, the more money we can
make for our scholarship fund. The event is only a few days away. Many of our
members have already paid for their tickets; have you? Some of our longtime,
true Rotarian members, who are retired, have been very responsive in
supporting this event; we hope the rest will do likewise.
Bill Adams introduced our speaker today, Mike Donovan, Past District
Governor, 2000-01, of District 6930. Mr. Donovan spoke on History of Rotary in
Florida. We were in for many surprises relating to this topic. The most surprising
to me was the fact that the Rotary Spirit actually began in May 1892, when
entrepreneur George W. Clark used to invite groups of local business men to his
hotel in Jacksonville, Florida for an evening of networking. At this time, a
young Chicagoan by the name of Paul Harris was his hotel clerk, observing from
across the lobby, Mr. Clark's networking event. After returning to Chicago,
this hotel clerk became a business man and invited fellow business men to join
him in networking. In 1905, Paul Harris held the first Rotary Meeting. Mr.
Harris and Mr. Clark had become lifelong friends. He wrote to Mr. Clark about
this newly formed Rotary Club. In 1906, George Clark founded Rotary Club of
Jacksonville, FL, meeting at his famed St. James Hotel; but it was not until
1910, it became officially installed.
In the beginning, Districts were lumped together, such as the Southern
Division, which incorporated seven southern states, with a one digit district
number. Over the years, the numbers grew to double, triple, and now quadruple
numbers, thus our District 6930, adopted in 1991. What does this tell you about
Rotary membership? Our current District Governor for 2003-04 is Rick Russell,
of Boca Raton. Mr. Russell is doing a fine job, carrying the torch.
This leads me to mention, next week's guest speaker is Bill Bean, Former
District Governor, 1992-93, of Jupiter-Tequesta. He will be speaking on
Alternative Medicine.
