Rotary Ramblings
May 4, 2004

We had a great group at today=E2=80=99s meeting on a gorgeous day in May. Th=
e year is=20
really flying by! President Mark Denkler was at the helm, Sylvia Pecaro=20
delivered a thought-provoking, from-the-heart invocation, and Jimmy Weathers=
poon,=20
with the help of Bruce Williams, led us in song. =20

Our two visiting Rotarians were introduced by Gerry Meeks, who also extended=
=20
his grateful thanks to members who made up at other clubs. Ray Ripley=20
attended a meeting on board a cruise ship, Tom Cook has been attending meeti=
ngs in=20
West Palm Beach, Stormi Norem visited the Boynton Beach club, and Nancy King=
=20
made up at Delray Beach Sunrise, Grand Forks, North Dakota, and East Grand F=
orks,=20
Minnesota. Mert Johnson and Gerry Meeks got on the information superhighway=
=20
and made up on-line.=20

Georgina Kerr-Jarrett reported that today the market was "not up". Rumor ha=
s=20
it that interest rates are about to rise and when that happens, investors=20
retreat. She suggested that if you want to make money another way, come to=20=
Bingo=20
Night this Thursday. She said we have had a good response so far, there are=
=20
lots of great silent auction items and everyone should have a wonderful time=
. =20
Our very special thanks to Shirley Clark who arranged for Fidelity Federal=20
Bank & Trust to sponsor prizes for the event.

Sergeant-At-Arms Tony Allerton did an outstanding job collecting dollars for=
=20
our scholarship fund. Popular categories were, "Welcome back Tony" and "Gla=
d=20
to be back -- glad to be anywhere!". Lew Currier donated the banner which w=
e=20
did not give away. Joyce Lunsford made a donation in honor of her=20
one-year-old great granddaughter, Campbell, who is coming to visit her on M=
other=E2=80=99s Day.=20
 Joyce is eagerly anticipating the visit because she will be meeting her for=
=20
the first time. Bill Talen is about to head north, so he left us with a=20
dollar for each of the 24 weeks he will be away. Nancy Owens was unable to=20=
help=20
out at the Delray Affair this year, so she gave $50.00. This generous=20
contribution, along with the others, brought the day=E2=80=99s total to $174=
.00.

Mark announced that there will be a Board meeting next Tuesday, May 11th,=20
7:30 a.m. at Ellie=E2=80=99s. =20

President-elect Bill Adams introduced Past District Governor W. J. "Bill"=20
Bean who delivered an incredible program on alternative medicine and natural=
=20
health. One of the greatest sources for medical information is the Bible. C=
ures=20
for stress, cancer prevention, instructions for treating infections and=20
transmittable diseases can all be found in the Old Testament.

Bill noted that in 1903 the life expectancy was 47, but now it is 77. This=
=20
can be attributed to cleaner water, better food, vaccinations and healthier=20
lifestyles.  =20

Folk medicine and herbal remedies have been available to us for a long time=20
and they have proven to be effective. Some of the alternatives he suggested=20
were eating red rice yeast to lower cholesterol, using cinnamon for diabetes=
, and=20
baking soda to prevent acne. He said the body is an electric mechanism whic=
h=20
explains why medical magnets and acupuncture are effective forms of=20
treatment.

Bill is a firm believer in "mind over matter". He said the greatest problem=
=20
you have to deal with in your lifetime has nothing to do with the body. It=20
has to do with the mind. Develop a positive attitude and you will reduce th=
e=20
diseases you have. His secrets of longevity are to get plenty of sleep, cle=
ar=20
your mind, lose weight, quit smoking, get lots of exercise, throw away you c=
ell=20
phone and stay off the highways. He left us with the good news that the=20
body, if treated properly, will last you 120-150 years. Sounds like we coul=
d have=20
some Rotarians with 120 years of perfect attendance! Thanks, Bill, for=20
another informative and worthwhile program.

Next week=E2=80=99s program: Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) students=20=
will=20
report on their weekend retreat in Port St. Lucie.

Leo Phillips held the winning ticket for the Green Hat. =20

Have a great week and we will see you at Bingo Night!
