ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
May 11, 2004
At 7:30 a.m., our Board of Directors met at Ellie's Flamingo Room. All
members are invited to attend these meetings. They are very informative. It was
noted that the third week of June (15), will be our new officers installation,
emceed by Ernie Simon. It will be held at Ellie's; same time; same place.
Our noon meeting was presided over by our "Tall Texan" President Mark
Denkler. The crowd is somewhat smaller, due to the "snowbirds" flying north, but
just as enthusiastic as ever.
Our well worded "Rotarian" invocation was given by Dave Harden. Steve Rich
led the singing. Bruce Williams certainly did that old piano justice, with all
his show tunes.
It seems lots of our members were born in May. Today, we had Bob Erickson,
(donating $55.00); Dave O'Connell (donating $70.00); Dave Armstrong (donating
$23.00); and Cliff Ripley (donating $78.00). Gentlemen, we thank you for your
generous donations; Happy Birthday to each of you.
I would like to mention that Cliff Ripley, 26 years ago, founded a Scholastic
Awards Banquet for the young people of our area, presenting scholarships.
This awards dinner is held yearly at The Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach. This
year it was held on April 15. Our Rotary Club, which helps fund this scholarship
awards yearly, was attended by members of our club. Mr. Ripley, as an
educator, sees this tremendous potential in our young people; our leaders of
tomorrow. He certainly is an outstanding citizen, and a true Rotarian.
Jim Pignato, "Mr. Emcee" did a tremendous job at our Rotary Bingo Party on
Thursday evening. Today, Jim welcomed two visiting Rotarians, as well as Bob
Erickson's guest, Janice Goatley. We had a former member, Don Thorpe, DVM
visiting with us today. It's always great to see "Doc" with us, and telling a joke
or two, in some special dialect.
Tony Allerton, Sergeant at Arms, gathered in $285.00 today, thanks to all the
above mentioned birthdays. Gil Forbes paid for a banner that he could not
give away.
BIG NEWS! Last Thursday's Bingo Fundraiser netted over $4,400.00. This
could not have been done without the hard work of many of our members. Wally
Doud, knowing he would be gone for the summer and would not be able to attend,
went out and solicited two restaurant silent auction gift certificates. Egon
Kurz, knowing his wife wasn't physically able to attend, bought two tickets
anyway, and attended. (Of course, he had to leave early to attend Mass.) There
are so many to thank for the success of this event. I will start with Jim
Pignato (Emcee) and Stormi Norem (Bingo caller.) Georgina Kerr-Jarrett is
Fundraiser Chairperson; thanks for your guidance and gifts. Anne Bright, thanks for
your participation and input. Joyce Lunsford, thanks for all your hard work.
Leo Phillips, thanks for your accounting skills. Jim Weatherspoon, thanks for
pitching in. Bill Arnst, thanks for being the hero of the evening, with your
"burglary tools." Pat Archer and Lyn Huckle, thank you, thank you, thank
you, for all your hard work this year, helping make life so much easier for me.
Thank you, countless others, for your donations and solicitations. I would be
remiss not to mention our biggest sponsors, Fidelity Federal Bank and Trust,
procured by Shirley Clark ($500.00.) Also, Lyn Huckle donated a rare gold
coin and $200.00. For those I failed to mention, thank you so much for your
attendance and donations. Next year, we hope to top $5,000.00! Folks, it's not
about playing BINGO, it's about having fun while fundraising.
Cliff Ripley held the winning ticket for the "green hat" today. Although he
did not find the ace of spades, he is $5.00 richer. This was implemented by
the Board this morning, for weekly winning ticket holders. The "pot" is now in
excess of $850.00.
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Steve Bates, Vocational Service, announced this
morning that our Rotary Giants will be playing Little League Baseball this Thursday
evening. For those of you that are unaware, our club has continually
sponsored this team for fifty years now; the longest standing sponsors in the area.
They will be playing in Miller Park (off Linton Blvd., just west of Dixie Hwy),
in the Playoffs, Thursday, May 13, at 6:30. They will be in field #5 (next
to the RR tracks). If they win this game, they will in the Playoffs on Sunday.
Their coach is Capt. Phillips, of the Delray Beach Police Department. It
would be nice for our members to go out and support "our team."
As our guest speakers today, we had two sophomore students from Atlantic High
School, who were chosen to represent us at RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership
Assembly.) They were Kassandra Engroff and Angelo Ierace. They were delightful,
very excited and grateful to have been chosen to attend RYLA. They spoke of
their experiences and acquired friendships while there. We thank Marilyn Ochs
for her participation in this project. I'm sure she has already been rewarded
with the friendship and love of these two young people.
