ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
May 18, 2004

Today was another "May Day" in South Florida; spectacular! Our president,
Mark Denkler presided over the meeting, with the "home crowd," since the
snowbirds have migrated north. Emmett Gumm gave a lovely "off the cuff" invocation,
since it was a last minute acceptance.

Jimmy Weatherspoon, leading us blindly, but well, without his glasses, got
plenty of help from Bruce Williams on piano. We sang Happy Birthday to Ernie
Simon, who graciously "doubled" his donation to $79.00, just to hear us sing.

Harvey Brown had the pleasure of welcoming only one visiting Rotarian. As
visitors of Rotarians, we had Debora Richards, (Mrs. Roger); Letitia Camargo,
and Priscila Compos. Letitia is our, forever smiling, Exchange Student from
Brazil, staying with Bill and Charlotte Adams. Priscilia is also an exchange
student from Brazil, staying in Boca. Nancy Owens donated $5.00 for a banner she
was unable to give away.

Make ups were done by Nancy King, Nancy Owens and Harvey Brown. We thank
each of you for putting forth the effort to keep our attendance among the top
clubs.

Georgina Kerr-Jarrett thanked Harvey Brown for the donation of his tie for
the Bingo Fundraiser. (She forgot to tell him we hung it in a tree! What is
that a symbol of?) Harvey, aren't you even curious who bought your tie? Georgina
also gave the stock market report, stating the market was really down on
Monday, but is up today!

Sergeant at Arms Ernie Simon, collected $131.00 today; very good for a "lean
attendance" day.

Bill Adams introduced our mystery speaker today, Eliot Kleinberg. If the
name sounds familiar to you, Mr. Kleinberg is a staff writer for The Palm Beach
Post. He is a rare breed; a Florida Native! Mr. Kleinberg spoke on Florida
History. He gave "fast and furious" facts on our state, going back to its
beginning. He seems most concerned about loyalty to our fine state. I must agree,
if we are going to enjoy the lovely weather and amenities Florida has to
offer, become a Floridian; protect the Florida we love! He has written a book,
Black Cloud. For those of you that missed this speaker, you missed a great
program.

Stormi Norem held the winning ticket to draw a card from the deck. Well, he
just increased my odds. The "pot" is now well over $850.00.

Next Week: Our guest speaker will be Col. Rodiquez, informing us on the ROTC
Program at Atlantic High School.
