ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
June 8, 2004

President Mark Denkler, in his last stretch as president, led a great meeting
today. At 7:30 a.m., he led his last board meeting. He announced that our
club won the prestigious Silver Citation, and Presidential Citation Awards,
from our District.

Gerry Meeks gave a lovely invocation. The team of Steve Rich and Bruce
Williams led us in song, a tribute to President Ronald Reagan.

Bruce Wenzel welcomed three visiting Rotarians. Dave O'Connell had his
twelve year old grandson, Rafe (a future Rotarian) with him today. Bill Adams had
his lovely wife Charlotte and son Tyler with him today.

Jim Blocker and Dave Harden, we thank you for going to the effort to do make
ups for our club.

Fred Bonardi gave a stock market report, stating the market is "quiet -
holding its own."

Sergeant at Arms Tony Allerton collected a total of $105.00 today. It was
pin day; don't get caught without your Rotary pin (unless of course, you want to
"pad the kitty"). Leo Phillips paid for a banner he could not give away.
Dave Armstrong gave $20.00 to boast about his first granddaughter;
congratulations, "Grandpa."

A couple of our members are a bit under the weather. Bill Harvey is in JFK,
having had a triple by-pass. Fred Runkel is due for a surgery soon. We wish
both of you a speedy recovery; the best of health.

Anne Bright will be going away for the summer, but first she had the winning
ticket to draw from the deck. She did not win the pot, but did receive $5.00.

I have been asked to announce that we are trying to update our "blue book."
(It is our club roster, with pictures.) All new members and all those who are
unhappy with your "mug shots," please call Art NeJame to have your picture
taken for the book. We want to do this as soon as possible, since we have new
members who need to be "identified." Art is our "official photographer."
Please call him at: 276-7766.

Another very important item is our Polio Plus contribution. We need to get
these contributions in by the end of June. If you have forgotten to do this
until now, you have a few weeks left. Please see Leo Phillips to arrange to do
this. It is our goal, as Rotarians, to stamp out Polio!

Next week will be our annual installation of officers and awards. Please be
at Ellie's Flamingo Room before 12:15, since this is a long meeting, we need
to get started promptly at 12:15 p.m.

Today's speaker was such a pleasure. Somehow, I kept looking at him and
thinking how familiar he looked. (Oh yes, a younger version of Bill Adams!) Our
speaker was Tyler Adams, one of the adventurous sons of Bill and Charlotte
Adams. He took us on a tour of the W. I. S. E. Isles, (Wales, Ireland, Scotland,
and England) , entitled "Roads Less Travelled."

When Tyler was 16, he traveled from his home to Highlands, N.C., to work for
the summer. After graduating from high school, he took a six week trip across
the U. S. He has also traveled around the globe, for about a year, visiting
such countries as New Zealand, Australia, Japan, China, Nepal, Tibet, The
Philippines, Thailand, Germany, France, England and Andorra.

Tyler explained his trip to W. I. S. E. Isles was a journey in search of the
character of the inhabitants, rather than a trip to a geographical
destination. The beauty of this trip was the fact that he hitch hiked, being well
received by the locals. They even fed him and offered him lodging. Mostly,
however, he pitched his tent; able to camp anywhere, with owner's permission. Trips
like these are important to youth, because they fulfill their need for
adventure. He also gave the message this reaffirms our hope that people in all
countries really do share the same basic humanitarian values.

Tyler is an Emergency Medical Technician, pursuing further medical education
in the field of nursing. Of course, his treks are not over, he plans to
continue traveling, once his training is completed. Tyler, we enjoyed your
wonderful pictures and commentary, with much envy. We wish you the best. What's next?

In memory of President Ronald Reagan, the stock market will be closed on
Friday. Also, there will be no mail delivery.
