ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
June 15, 2004
Today was a very special day for the Rotary Club of Delray Beach. We had our
new slate of officers and directors installed. We were honored to have with
us today, District 6930 Governor-elect 2005-2006, Ken Hirsch, and his wife
Shirley, who presides as president of Boca Sunrise Rotary. That sure looks like
a family committed to Rotary. We also had with us President Betsy Owen, of
Delray Sunrise Rotary, who is now Asst. District Governor-elect.
We also had with us today, Charlotte and Tyler Adams, wife and son of our new
president, Bill Adams. Also in attendance was Pat Phillips, lovely wife of
our President-elect Leo Phillips.
Our handsome, tall Texan, President Mark Denkler presided over the meeting.
He expresses, with a sigh, that next week will be his last duty as president.
He will then become Immediate Past President.
Sergeant at Arms Tony Allerton gathered in $228.00 today. Harvey and Gayl
Brown, and Ron and Barbara Backer are celebrating anniversaries. Harvey and Ron
generously donated $25.00 each. We wish each of you a happy anniversary. Art
NeJame paid for a banner he was unable to give away.
Today, we had a very generous donation of $100.00 from Dr. Gay Vela. Her
daughter is facing two very serious surgeries in a couple of weeks; Gay is
requesting our prayers for her daughter, and also for her own strength and
endurance.
Jim Pignato, twice Past President (1965-66, 1999-00), gave a bit of history
on our Rotary Club of Delray Beach, chartered January 13, 1948. Our first
president was Lauren C. Hand. He was the owner of our local Hand's Stationers.
Of course, Jim also had a bit of humor to share from "Uncle Luigi," from Sicily.
President Denkler gave pins for perfect attendance. Heading the list was
Harvey Brown, with 37 years of perfect attendance. Close on his heels was Ernie
Simon, with 36 years of perfect attendance. Bill Arnst (who was absent) has 27
years and 8 months perfect attendance; Gerry Meeks has 16 years. There were
more of us with less years, but nevertheless, perfect attendance. It is a
real commitment to make this effort, but very rewarding, especially when we do
"make ups" with other fellow Rotarians at their clubs.
Two years ago, our club made a commitment to donate $100.00 per person
yearly, for two years to Polio Plus. We know it is impossible for every member to
do this, however, two-thirds of the club has fulfilled this commitment. It is
with pleasure to mention those who have exceeded this commitment.
They are:
Rel Moorcroft $1,000.00 (honoring his wife, Regie)
Jess Sowards 700.00
Leo Phillips 700.00
Marilyn Ochs 400.00
Jan Styperek 400.00
Mark Danker 350.00
Nancy King 350.00
Tom Cook 300.00
Art NeJame 300.00
There were twenty-five other members that met the $200.00 goal. There were
ten other contributors. It isn't too late to make your donations, as we have
until the end of June 2004.
President Denkler mentioned the awards given to our club by Rotary
International this year. They are the Silver Award and the Presidential Citation for
fulfilling goals. We also raised enough funds to award 15 scholarships to
Atlantic High School students this year. Then he presented our new president, Bill
Adams, with his gavel. Bill's remarks included three points: (1)
Communicate, Communicate, Communicate! (2) Succession and Continuity. (3) Service. (A
tidbit of trivia: President Bill Adams was born in 1948, the year Rotary Club of
Delray Beach was chartered.)
Ernie Simon, in his very professional way, installed each officer and board
member. Thank you, Ernie.

president. Bill, you certainly have "big shoes" to fill! (Good thing Mark owns
a shoe store.)
Next week's speaker will be Bob Keltie, of FAU; topic Entrepreneurship,
Web-based.
