ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
June 29, 2004
Today, we had a new president; Bill Adams. We are looking forward to a year
under your leadership. (Where was Mark today?) I think Bill is just relieved
that he no longer has to find speakers! Leo Phillips, President-elect, will
be in charge of programs this year. I'm sure he will be more than glad to
listen to your ideas and help with procuring speakers.
Leo Phillips gave a lovely, patriotic invocation. Steve Rich led us in songs
we should all know, without the song book! Bruce Williams was given special
recognition by Dave Armstrong, giving money in his honor. (Too bad Bruce is
always gone when his audience praises him; we love you Bruce. You are a real
asset to our club.)
Harvey Brown had an easy job as greeter. He acknowledged the make ups Bill
Arnst (aboard a cruise ship); and Joyce Lunsford did in advance. Jess Sowards
had as his guest, Rick Snyder, Senior Account Manager, with WXEL. Mr. Snyder
will be our guest speaker in August. Bill Adams had his wife Charlotte, and
our Exchange Students, Leticia Camargo and Priscila Campos as his guests.
Fred Bonardi gave the stock market report. At the time of his report, the
DOW was up 63 points; the NASDAQ up 15 points. He expects the "Feds" to raise
rates 1/4 point tomorrow. He feels this will get the market "moving."
President Adams announced Rotary Exchange's GSE Outgoing Team to Italy. He
read all the rules to us; specifying that no Rotarian, or their family are
eligible for this trip. He did state however that the team leader can be a
Rotarian. Do you know any local business people you would like to recommend for
this terrific trip to Italy? I'm sure there are dozens of them; help send a
deserving business/professional person on this trip!
Also, if you have not had your picture made for our Club Directory, please
see Art NeJame, photographer. We will be sending these to press soon. Hurry!
Tony Allerton, Sergeant at Arms, collected a total of $117.00 today. This
included $25.00 from George Kientzy for his and Mary's anniversary. He also
gave $8.00, so we would let him go away for the summer. Fred Bonardi gave $18.00
in honor of his and Barbara's anniversary. We wish all of you the best.
Kurt Godfrey had the "green hat" ticket that won him $5.00, not the big
winnings of $168.00. That's okay Kurt, next week the winnings will be bigger.
Our guest speakers were our lovely, young Exchange Students from Votuporanga,
(a town of about 100,000) San Paulo, Brazil, Leticia Camargo and Priscila
Campos. As you know, Leticia has been with Bill and Charlotte Adams almost a
year now. Priscila has been with them since school was out this year. These two
girls have done more traveling in the U. S. this year, than most of all of us
together. It has been a whirlwind tour. Letitia fit in beautifully at
Atlantic High School. With her dancing skills, she became an Eaglette right away.
The girls (with a bit of help from Bill Adams) showed us slides of their many
travels while in the U. S. Their most recent trip was with a group of
eighty-three exchange students from all over the world. They visited the west
coast, including Las Vegas, Phoenix, and on to CA. Bill and Charlotte Adams are
taking them to New York on July 4th. What a way to celebrate the Fourth!
At this time, I feel I must mention that our club owes a big debt of
gratitude to Bill and Charlotte for being "parents" to these girls this year. That
is a tremendous responsibility. Also, to Tyler and Teak Adams for being "big
brothers" to them. They also played a big role in this successful "happening."
Next week, a familiar face will be our guest speaker. Georgina Kerr-Jarrett
will be speaking on her Rotary trip to Osaka, Japan. Georgina, I am looking
forward to hearing all about it.
Happy Fourth of July to all!
