ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
July 13, 2004
Today started out with President Bill Adams presiding over his first board
meeting, officially, as president. Under his guidance, we accomplished much.
Three people were presented for membership: Sally Dye, Lou Cucci and Barnie
Shuhi. Gay Vela was granted a leave of absence. Sally Dye was unanimously
voted as the club's Administrative Secretary.
Bruce Galloway has suggested that our club have a special Scholarship Fund in
memory of Rel Moorcroft. This is very positively being reviewed by the
board.
President Bill Adams reports that his trip to New York with his wife
Charlotte and our Foreign Exchange Students, Priscilla and Letitia was quite an
enjoyable trip for all. He thanked the club for our assistance. As you know, Bill
and Charlotte have been "parents" to Letitia for a year now. She will be
leaving on July 15, for home in Brazil. We have enjoyed having such a pleasant
young lady in our midst this year. Bill and Charlotte, again, we thank you from
the bottom of our heart for your parenting Letitia.
Emmett Gumm gave the invocation today. Jimmy Weatherspoon (without his
glasses) led us in two of our favorites: God Bless America and Smile. Bruce
Williams, you seem to disappear each week before we can thank you, face to face, for
your lovely music. However, President Bill did read your e-mail of thanks to
the group. You are special and vital to us. By the way, Kurt Godfrey gave
$3.00 to the club, because he enjoys your music so much.
Harvey Brown, eager to try out our new microphone, did not have much to do.
We had no visiting Rotarians. He did thank those who did make ups: John
Arnold, Mark Denkler and Bill Talen (2x's). Lyn Huckle tried to give away her
banner, to no avail.
Candace Etzler, Sergeant at Arms, collected $59.00. She had no birthdays,
nor anniversaries; so, she did a pin check. Wear your Rotary pins!
President Bill Adams presented Immediate Past President Mark Denkler with the
Presidential Citation Award, received during his administration. This is
from Rotary International. Only two districts in the whole world received this
award this year. Our District 6930, under the leadership of Immediate Past
District Governor, Rick Russell, was one of them.
Our guest speakers today were Richard Fleming, County Coordinator for Special
Olympics, Palm Beach County, Florida. With him was his perky spokesperson, a
competing athlete herself, Kristen Kovach. Kristen had with her, her mother,
Joanne Kovach.
Richard explained his competing athletes were athletes with development
disabilities. The Palm Beach Special Olympics Chapter was founded in 1968. They
compete in County Competition; Area Competition; State Competition; Regional
Competition and World Competition. They have Winter/Summer competitions. They
have 200 volunteer coaches, preparing these athletes for competition.
Kristen stole our hearts! She is such an enthusiastic spokesperson for the
Special Olympics; being the first spokesperson for this group (since 1986).
Kristen, now 33 years old, let us know that she, and the other athletes are
"just like us, just slower." She has appeared on television, radio and other
forms of media, to promote the Special Olympics.
Kristen is very excited about the new training facility, being built on Lake
Worth Road, across from PBCC. To raise funds for this facility, she and other
athletes are selling "commemorative bricks" for $200.00. This facility will
house a swimming pool and other venues for training the athletes. Most of the
support groups are within the families of the athletes, according to Joanne
Kovach, Kristen's mother. This was such a great program; those of you who
missed it, you really missed it!
If anyone is interested in volunteering, donating, or learning more about
this program, you may call Richard Fleming at: 561-588-5035 x1, or email:
SOPBC@hotmail.com.
Next Week: Our own Pat Archer (now that she is back on her feet, after
surgery) will present the program, on her trip to Japan.
