ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
July 20, 2004
President Bill Adams started the meeting with accolades to Bruce Williams,
our musical maestro. For those of you who do not know why Bruce "plays and
leaves;" he has another commitment just after playing for us each week. He asked
me to convey this to the membership, so you will know why he cannot stay for
the meeting. He loves Rotary, and states it is such an important part of his
life.
Dave O'Connell gave a lovely invocation. Gerry Meeks led us through two of
our old favorites. Ken and Susan Peltzie are celebrating their anniversary.
Ken donated $40.00 in honor of this. Ken and Susan, we wish you both the best.
Harvey Brown is getting off too easy these days with his greeting of visiting
Rotarians. He did, however, welcome Hal Fotz, of Boca Raton Rotary and Past
District Governor of District 725, Long Island. Our members who did make ups
were: Ernie Simon, who was a stowaway on some cruise ship; Dave Harden, Bob
Erickson, and Harvey Brown. Gentlemen, we thank you for your efforts.
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave a stock report: "Market is moving. Lost a bit of
ground. Very unpredictable. For this week, we have an up moment." (These are
excerpts from her report.) How was vacation, Georgina?
Sergeant at Arms Roy Simon collected a total of $102.00. Of course, $40.00
of this was Ken Peltzie's anniversary money. We also had monetary tributes to
our new president, Bill Adams, wishing him a good year at the helm. Roger
Richardson gave $5.00, honoring his first anniversary in Delray Beach.
Dave Armstrong has informed me that Fred Runkel is back in the hospital; not
doing too well. Fred, we all miss you; hurry back.
For those members with e-mail; we need everyone to sign the roster and give
your e-mail address, so Sally Dye, Executive Secretary, can send this
information to our District Governor. Our District newsletter will be sent by e-mail.
This is the second publication for three new members: Sally Dye, Lou Coucci
and Barnie Shuhi.
Today, our program was none other than our own Pat Archer, doing "show and
tell" of her recent trip to our Sister City, Miyazu, Japan. As you know, Pat
Archer is City Commissioner Pat Archer. At this time, she is devoting her full
time to this position.
Pat and six others from Delray Beach flew to Osaka, Japan. From there, it
was a long trek, by various modes of transportation to arrive in Miyazu, Japan,
their destination. They were warmly greeted by a delegation as they arrived
at their hotel. Much bowing and handshaking took place.
Miyazu is a smaller town than Delray Beach, nestled in the mountains. She
had the opportunity to visit many of their beautiful gardens, much like the
replicas at our own Morikami Museum. They also visited temples, including one
"wrapped" in 18 carat gold leaf, built for Shogun leaders. Some of them were as
much as 500 years old.
Pat told us the food was delicious, so long as she did not ask what she was
eating. She also said the food was very expensive, especially the hybrid fruit
and vegetables at the market. Also, visiting were two other Sister Cities;
from Nelson, New Zealand and Quong Hun Dou, China (located where the Great Wall
meets the sea).
Pat is recovering from foot surgery a few weeks ago. She is raring to get on
with taking care of business. Pat, thanks for your presentation; good
health. (Also, thanks to her assistant, Bill Adams.)
