ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
August 3, 2004
President Bill Adams presided over yet another terrific meeting. His quote
for the day: "Whether you think you can or think you can't, you are right." He
introduced our new "Rotary Bulletin Board." Each week, we will have items of
interest to the members, pertaining to Rotary and our club members. Today's
board sported a couple of models in our midst; Pat Archer and Nancy King.
Watch for next week's postings.
Ron Backer gave a beautiful, patriotic invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon, brave
soul, led our group acappella. Bruce Williams, you are truly missed. By the
way, our largest category for the day was "Bruce Williams Appreciation."
Please hurry back, Bruce!
We sang Happy Anniversary to John Callahan (donating $35.00) and Jim Blocker
(donating $8.00). John and Carole, Jim and Barbara, we wish all of you the
very best, and many, many more happy years together.
Bruce Wenzel, having an easy job, greeted only one visiting Rotarian. He did
announce all those who did make ups. Among them, we had Tom Cook back, with
five make ups, and contributing $16.00. Others who did make ups were Joyce
Lunsford, Lyn Huckle and Leo Phillips.
Fred Bonardi did the stock market report, stating the market was down, but
the previous day was up. Looks like it's seesawing, as usual. Fred also was
Sergeant at Arms, collecting $140.00. He also donated five dollars, celebrating
his one year since surgery, and is healthy!
We need to remember Fred Runkel in our prayers. Also, continue to pray for
Dr. Gay Vela and her daughter.
President-elect Leo Phillips welcomed our guest speakers, Peter Castello and
Jane Mills.
Mr. Castello is President of the Rotary Club of Suntree, in Melbourne, FL.
He has previously served there as Club Service Chair and Secretary.
Mr. Castello was born in Brooklyn, NY; moved to McKenzie, TN, where he joined
Rotary in 1993. He moved to Melbourne in 2000. He is now District 6930
Youth Exchange Chair for the last two years. To acknowledge Peter's tireless
enthusiasm and accomplishments in Youth Services, he was named Co-Rotarian of the
year for District 6930 last year.
Mr. Castello presented our club with a manual outlining what to do and expect
for inbound and outbound students in the Exchange Program.
Some of the youth services provided by District 6930 include:
Interact - For High School Students
Youthact - For Middle School Students
Rotakids - For Elementary School Students
RYLA - For High School Students
Rotary Youth Exchange - For 15 to 18 1/2 year old students.
Information was distributed to each table, outlining some of the activities
of Rotary with students.
Jane Mills works with Rotakids. She is a former teacher, and obviously loves
kids. She enthusiastically told us about her program with the kids in her
area. She is a member of Rotary Club of Stuart and Immediate Past President.
She brought greetings from her current president, Ed Morley, formerly a member
of Rotary Club of Delray Beach. Looks like Ed is heading up a very active
club in Stuart.
Some of the projects Ms. Mills has headed is gardening, cleaning up the
beach/roadways and many other projects. Her objective is to teach the kids
self-esteem. She showed us many pictures of happy kids at work. We are proud to
call these two fellow Rotarians; they are making a big difference in the lives of
the leaders of our country tomorrow.
For your information: our club has a new mailing address: Rotary Club of
Delray Beach, 255 N. E. Second Avenue, #206, Delray Beach, FL 33444. Please make
a note of this if you are sending your dues by mail.
Next Week: Mike and Betsy Owen will be our guest speakers. They will be
telling us about their recent trip to France and Normandy. This should be
exciting and very informative.
