ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
August 10, 2004
President Bill Adams started his day presiding over our monthly Board of
Directors Meeting. There were seventeen members in attendance. Then, at noon, he
presided over another fantastic, regular weekly meeting.
Ernie Simon gave a beautiful invocation. Lyn Huckle (brave gal), led the
singing. Thank Goodness, we had Bruce Williams back today, playing all those
favorite show tunes, and of course, the Tennessee Waltz. Bruce, we have taken a
vote----you can never go on vacation again!
Harvey Brown had the pleasure of welcoming Marianne Blackwell and her
grandson Evan, from D. C. We also had Betsy and Michael Owen, of Rotary Club of
Delray Sunrise.
John Callahan and Pat Archer are celebrating birthdays. He donated $10.00;
she donated $20.00 for her birthday. Pat and husband, David, are also
celebrating their anniversary; she donated $11.00 for that. Hack and Gloria Allen are
celebrating their anniversary; he donated $57.00 to the club. We thank each
of you for your generous donations and wish all of you the best, with long
years of happiness.
Nancy King did make ups twice. Mickey Manning had his beautiful daughter,
Ashley, with him today. She and another of our scholarship recipients, Keisha,
were present to thank our club for their scholarships, before heading off to
FSU.
Fred Bonardi, again "wearing two hats," started out with the stock market
report. He was happy to announce that the market was up at noon. The Dow was up
70 points; the NASDAQ up 20 points; the S&P up 8 points. This is quite a
rally from last week's market. He also announced that Mr. Greenspan is meeting
today; we will see what the outcome on interest rates is.
Fred then donned his Sergeant at Arms hat. As I entered the meeting today,
as usual, I dropped a buck into the "Category of the Day" coffer. When I asked
him what the category was, his answer was that it had not been determined as
yet. Little did I know that my friend, Lyn Huckle was going around to each
table collecting for a yet unnamed category. She had donated $20.00; Betsy and
Mike Owen had contributed $25.00, etc. Then, Fred announced, to my delighted
surprise, that I was the "Category" for the day, because I write the
newsletter weekly; I was totally overwhelmed. I write the newsletter weekly because
it is my contribution to one of the best service clubs ever; The Rotary Club
of Delray Beach. (And as you can see, I sure can "ramble on.") I thank each of
you for your kind words. I would also like to add a thank you to Nancy King,
who fills in when I am unavailable. On a mid-summer day, Fred collected a
whopping $235.00.
ANNOUNCEMENT: Again, I will remind you that our mid-year dues are due! Our
new mailing address once again is: 255 N. E. Second Ave. #206, Delray Beach, FL
33444. Of course, you may hand deliver your check to Sally Dye, our new
Executive Secretary, next week, at our luncheon.
We are sad to announce the resignation of one of our newest members, Michael
Caldwell; he found it impossible to attend our noon meetings. On a lighter
note, we will be installing three new members next week.
This morning, at the board meeting, Bruce Galloway presented the idea of our
club implementing a "Rel Moorcroft Scholarship Fund." This was unanimously
accepted. At the August 31 meeting, we will have as our special guest, Regie
Moorcroft, Rel's widow. At that time, we will pay tribute to Rel, and are
asking for testimonials from the membership, as "what Rel Moorcroft meant to you as
a Rotarian, and a friend." Please, either e-mail this to me, or let me know,
and be ready to do this "live." Keeping it brief (if possible) will give
more people a chance to express their gratitude about Rel, "Mr. Rotary."
Leo Phillips was proud to announce our guest speakers for the day, Michael
and Betsy Owen. She is a Florida native (a rare breed); raised in Miami,
educated at Emory University. She taught school for 42 years, retiring July 2003.
She is the Immediate past President of Rotary of Delray Sunrise, and now
serving as Assistant Governor of District 6930. During her teaching career, she
received many journalism awards, and this November will receive the National
Association of Journalism Inspirational Teacher of the Year Award.
Mike Owen, a southerner, from Charlotte N. C., graduated from Davidson
College and Harvard Business School. After coming to Florida in 1969, he developed
a career in real estate development, management and sales. Mike was the 1991
President of the Florida Association of Realtors. He has received Associate
Realtor and Realtor of the Year, and numerous sales awards.
The Owens live in Delray Beach. They enjoy sailing, fishing, tennis, golf,
skiing and travel. (And, do they travel!) This May, they felt compelled to
attend the 60th Anniversary of D-Day in England and Normandy, France.
The Owens took the National Geographic Tour to England & Normandy, which they
highly recommend. They showed slides of their tour and described each one to
us. Unfortunately, time did not permit us to see all they had witnessed.
Mike told us there were 9,386 Americans buried in the cemetery on Omaha
Beach; 76,000 died at Normandy. The ceremony, honoring the American participation
at Normandy, was attended that day by 15 to 20,000 Americans. It was an
emotional experience for all. He mentioned that many of the French acknowledged
their appreciation to them regarding the American participation. Time and space
does not permit more info; you should have been at the meeting. Mike and
Betsy Owen, we certainly enjoyed having you, and what an experience!
Betsy also mentioned her club's upcoming event, The Duck Derby. AFLAC is
sponsoring them (how appropriate). It will be on October 16, at 1:00 p.m.,
Veterean's Park. Thousands of ducks will be released into the Intracoastal; it
will be a sight to behold; be there! The proceeds will go to scholarships and
local projects.
Next week: Our guest speaker will be Rick Snyder, of WXEL. Rick was a recent
visitor to our club, as some of you may remember.
