Rotary Ramblings
August 17, 2004
President Bill Adams is certainly deserving of a round of applause for the=20
fantastic job he=E2=80=99s doing leading our club. It hasn=E2=80=99t taken=20=
him long to become=20
a seasoned pro at the podium. Thanks, Bill!
Today=E2=80=99s invocation was delivered by Joyce Lunsford who read an excer=
pt from=20
the "Soldiers=E2=80=99 and Sailors=E2=80=99 Prayer Book" published in 1944.=20=
The passage was=20
written by Alexander A. Vandergrift, her commandant in the Marine Corps and=20
later her neighbor. It=E2=80=99s a small world after all!
Song leader Jimmy Weatherspoon put us in a patriotic mood by choosing=20
"America The Beautiful" as our lead off number. Birthday greetings were sun=
g to Kurt=20
Godfrey, and happy anniversary wishes were extended in song to Arthur Reef.=20=
=20
Pat Archer is celebrating a birthday and a wedding anniversary. Her late=20
arrival, along with a generous donation to the scholarship fund earned her a=
n=20
encore performance of the Rotary chorus.
Guests and visiting Rotarians were welcomed by Jim Pignato. Ernie Simon did=
=20
a wonderful job raising $181.00 as Sergeant at Arms. Today=E2=80=99s specia=
l was the=20
Hurricane Charley Victims=E2=80=99 Relief Fund. Lou Cucci kicked it off wit=
h a $50=20
contribution and many other generous donations followed. =20
For those who would like to offer donations in the recovery effort, send you=
r=20
contributions through the Red Cross by calling (561) 650-9132 between 9:00=20
a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays. By mail, make your check out to Red Cross, Gre=
ater=20
Palm Beach Area Chapter and mail to Greater Palm Beach Area Chapter, 825 Fer=
n=20
Street, West Palm Beach, Florida 33401. On-line donations may be made by=20
going to the local Red Cross web-site at www.RedCross-pbc.org.
=20
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett reported that yesterday was a great day for the stock=20
market so she expected it to be down today. The good news is that it wasn=
=E2=80=99t=20
down -- in fact, there seems to be more optimism in the market. That=E2=80=
=99s always=20
good news! And if the market has been good to you, several opportunities ar=
e=20
available to share your wealth.=20
Bill Adams announced that information was placed on each table regarding the=
=20
goals of the Rotary Foundation for the upcoming year. A $100 per capita=20
giving goal was unanimously endorsed by every district at the 2001 Council o=
n=20
Legislation, and it is the goal of the Every Rotarian, Every Year initiative=
. =20
Achieving the $100 per capita giving goal will enable the Foundation to meet=
the=20
need for humanitarian and educational programs identified by clubs and=20
districts=20
Bill also provided information for members interested in applying for a=20
Rotary International MasterCard. When a new account is opened, the cardhold=
er=20
will be sent a $25 check made payable to "The Rotary Club." To request an=20
application, call 1-800-410-6262.
A special thanks to Nancy Owens for volunteering to serve as the local=20
liaison for the Rotary Youth Exchange Programs. We know you will do a great=
job,=20
Nancy! =20
Leo Phillips introduced today=E2=80=99s guest speaker, Rick Snyder, WXEL=E2=
=80=99s Senior=20
Account Manager in Corporate Underwriting. His career in broadcasting spans=
=20
more than 35 years and covers markets in the Northeast. He joined WXEL in 1=
998=20
and has been part of its phenomenal growth in the last few years.
Rick told us about the strong commitment WXEL has toward children=E2=80=99s=20
programming. He said that 60 hours a week is devoted to kids' programming t=
hat teaches=20
good values, reading, math and other worthwhile activities.
The PBS "Ready To Learn" service is a nationwide effort which helps teachers=
,=20
caregivers and parents instill the love of learning in kids. Lesson plans=20
and other activities are available to teachers as part of the program.
Funding for WXEL comes from the Department of Education, grants from=20
foundations, individuals, and underwriting. Underwriting has increased 500%=
over the=20
years. WXEL offers the L.U.C.K.Y. (Local Underwriters Caring for Kids=20
Year-round) package. The sponsorship package includes 10 and 15 second anno=
uncements=20
as well as other promotions and partnerships. For further information=20
regarding rates and availabilities, you can contact Rick at 363-3324 or by E=
mail at=20
rsnyder@wxel.org.
=20
We continue to send our thoughts and prayers out to Fred Runkel who is=20
recovering from heart surgery. Fred was featured in a Sun-Sentinel newspape=
r=20
article about the Delray Beach Chapter of Mended Hearts, an organization of=20
volunteers who visit people who have undergone heart surgery. The volunteer=
=20
emissaries visited Fred in the hospital and provided him with comfort and mo=
ral support=20
during his recovery.
Also featured in the Sun-Sentinel was a lengthy article on our fellow=20
Rotarian, Reverend Roger P. Richardson who leads the congregation at The Chu=
rch of=20
the Palms in Delray Beach. His church has invited the Bethel Community Hait=
ian=20
Church to share its facilities for their services. The Haitian congregation=
=20
had been renting space in Boynton Beach.
Ellie Lowery would like to remind everyone that our August 31st meeting will=
=20
be a tribute to Rel Moorcroft. Please let her know if you have an interesti=
ng=20
story about Rel that you would like to share with our club. We are honoring=
=20
Rel with a Scholarship in his name. Our special guest will be Regie=20
Moorcroft.
Joyce Lunsford held the winning ticket for the Green Hat drawing. Better=20
luck next time, Joyce!
Next week's program: Arlene Brookman of Alzheimer's Community Care, Inc.
Enjoy your week!
