ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

August 24, 2004

Not only did President Bill lead a great meeting, he also gave a lovely
invocation. He certainly invokes the Rotary Spirit!

Jimmy Weatherspoon, we thank you for your tireless efforts, leading the
singing. Bruce Williams, we all know that you have a commitment immediately
following your performance with us each week, but if you only knew the tributes
given you; again this week, money was given in your honor.

Bruce Wenzel graciously welcomed our two visiting Rotarians. Herb, of
Buffalo, gave us a banner. Emmett Gumm actually was able to give away a banner
today. Make ups were done by Lyn Huckle and Jim Blocker. We thank each of you.

Fred Bonardi, reporting on the stock market, told us the market is slightly
down for the day. Also, it's slightly down for the year. (Georgina, did you
say you had a different report?)

Sergeant At Arms Roy Simon, gave money in honor of his three year old
grandson, Derrick. We sang Happy Birthday for him, not to him. In all, Roy
collected $98.00 today.

Emmett Gumm installed two new members today: Sally Dye (Candace Etzler's
mother) and Barnie Shuhi (back with us). As you know, the highlight of the
ceremony was: "where the rubber meets the road!" Sally is the pleasant lady sitting
next to the entrance door, taking your "lunch money" each week; she is our
new Executive Secretary.

President Adams reminded all that your club dues are DUE! If you have not
paid these, please write your check and give it to Sally Dye next week. If your
company needs an invoice, she can also give this to you.

Also, we were reminded of the Rotary Mastercard, and its benefits to our
organization. Your participation puts money into Rotary.

Georgina Kerr-Jarrett, Chair for Fundraising, needs committee participation
for a Centennial Program. As you know, Rotary is celebrating its Centennial
Year this year.

Gerry Meeks is recovering from back surgery. He is in Pinecrest Recovery.
Give him a call, or visit. Keep Fred Runkel in your prayers.

Ernie Simon announced our recipient for the upcoming "Service Above Self
Award." Our recipient this year is well deserving; she is Elizabeth "Libby"
Wesley. She is often called "the mother of Delray." Over many decades, she has
worked to inspire pride, and celebrate diversity in Delray Beach and Palm Beach
County. She founded the Roots Festival in 1977. This lady has so many
accolades to her credit. I will touch on more of these later. Remember to keep
this date on your calendar: November 9, 2004; Old School Square; 11:30 a.m. The
award ceremony will be held on the front walkway of Old School Square; then we
will proceed to the Vintage Gym for lunch. A brick/placque will be placed on
the walkway, honoring Ms. Wesley, along with the past recipients of our
prestigious Service Above Self Award.

Leo Phillips introduced our guest speaker today, Mark Cornett, MSHSA; Senior
Vice-President Chief Operating Officer, of Alzheimer's Community Care, Inc.
Mark has been working with not-for-profit, community based health services and
adult day care since 1987. In his present position, he is responsible for all
service and administrative functions of the agency.

Mr. Cornett holds a Masters degree in Health Services Administration. He has
a positive "can do" attitude that we WILL make a difference, for the better,
in developing or improving health systems that support people with Alzheimer's
Disease, or similar conditions.

The Alzheimer's Community Care encompasses Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie
Counties. It is United Way funded. They have a 24 hour crisis line, for the
patient, caregiver, law enforcement, or anyone having questions, or needing
help. At this time, they are holding educational training for law enforcement,
fire personnel, 911 personnel, etc.

There are ten diseases related to dementia. Some of the most prominent
symptoms are short term memory loss; impaired judgment; genetic factors. He also
stated the disease begins 30 years prior to symptoms showing up.

He told us much more, but I can't remember what it was! Actually, we all
joke about this, but it can become very debilitating. Let's hope we can find
medical help for this soon, so seniors can have longer, productive lives.

NEXT WEEK: Tribute to Rel Moorcroft! Please send to me, via e-mail, your
memories of Rel. We are compiling a notebook to give to Regie (his widow) at the
end of the program. Also, if you will be willing to give an oral tribute,
please e-mail me, so I may call on you during the program. Since we are
creating a scholarship in Rel's name, if you want to contribute to this next week, be
prepared to do so. Thanks.

In two weeks, we will have as our guest speaker, Bill Wheelock, of World
Council, of Palm Beaches.
