ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

August 31, 2004

President Bill Adams presided over another special Rotary meeting today. Our
invocation was given by Rev. Roger Richardson, doing a fine job; wow, he
"covered it all," just like a pro! As most of you know, Rev. Richardson pastors
The Church of the Palms, replacing Rev. Jim Atchison, after his retirement.
Now, he has become a member of our Rotary Club, replacing Rev. Atchison again.
(We all hope Jim is enjoying his retirement up there in the mountains of TN.)

Since today was a tribute to Rel Moorcroft, Jimmy Weatherspoon led the
singing with a couple of songs he was sure that Rel would have liked; He's Got The
Whole World In His Hands, and Smile. We also sang Happy Birthday to Harvey
Brown, even though he gave $10.00 to try to keep us from singing.

Bruce Williams, they did it again; money was given to the fund in your
behalf, for your lovely music; donor, Dave Armstrong. Even though Bruce has always
"skipped" when the acknowledgment is made, he does read the newsletter. He
always responds with a gracious thank you to his "fans."

It was good to see Gerry Meeks back with us today, after his surgery; says he
is doing "pretty good."

Harvey Brown welcomed our guests today. Ken Peltzie had his wife, Susan, as
a guest today. Dave Harden did a make up; thanks Dave.

Fred Bonardi, giving the stock report, had to tell us the market is down
today. August was the worse in 100 years; ouch!

Candace Etzler, Sergeant at Arms, gathered in a whopping $206.00 today.
Since it was "Rel Remembrance Day," Lyn Huckle gave $100.00; Jon Simon gave
$50.00; Nancy Owens gave $20.00. There were many more tributes, however.

Egon Kurz informed us of Hurricane Preparedness. He reminded us to put all
important papers in a safety deposit box, including utility receipts. He also
informed us of a facility in WPB that picks up at risk, life threatening
patients, dependent on electricity for survival. As most of you know, Egon's wife,
Elsie, is on oxygen constantly. The threat of a disaster is more of a threat
to them, than the rest of us. Bob Erickson also reminded us that we have
fresh water at our disposal, in our own water heaters, if the water supply is cut
off, or contaminated. Most of us "store" up to 40 gallons in our water
heaters. Let's do a lot of praying, and preparing, just in case we are hurricane
victims.

President Adams announced that some of us have overlooked paying our
semiannual dues. For those of you that this applies to, please take care of this
ASAP. Also, the Rotary MasterCard is still available, with $25.00 going to our
club for every $75.00 spent by new applicants.

Today, we had as our special honored guest, Regie Moorcroft, wife of the late
Rel Moorcroft, fondly known as "Mr. Rotary."

A few weeks ago, Bruce Galloway suggested that our club pay tribute to Rel,
by creating a scholarship in his honor. The board of directors unanimously
approved this; thus the program and the newly formed "Rel Moorcroft Scholarship,"
to be given each year, along with the other scholarships. Bruce kicked off
this designation with a $200.00 check for the "Rel Moorcroft Scholarship Fund."
It was presented today, in Bruce's behalf, since he was away on vacation.

Art NeJame and his staff presented a terrific, special surprise; a life size,
color poster of Rel. Regie plans to hang this in her home, and was very
grateful. Art, thanks for your participation.

I received e-mails from some of the "snowbirds," relating their friendship
and fond memories of Rel. I read tributes from Ernie Simon, who was away on
vacation; Leo Phillips, away on vacation, and a cute memory from Bill Talen.
Those who orally participated in expressing their love and memories of Rel were
Egon Kurz, Lyn Huckle, Steve Bates, Emmett Gumm, Ken Peltzie, Bill Adams and
myself. If time had permitted, there would have been others.

Regie interjected more about Rel's love for Rotary, and how it meant so much
to him. She said when he couldn't sleep, she would find him in his study,
working on Rotary "stuff." It is no wonder we have found it hard to fill Rel's
shoes. Rel has been gone a year now, and we are just now beginning to catch
up, with the help from our new Executive Secretary, Sally Dye, who is doing a
terrific job. Regie also presented a monetary gift to our club today, in honor
of Rel.

At the end of the meeting, Regie was presented a notebook with all the notes
I had received from our members, and their fond memories of Rel, along with
pictures of the day he honored her with the Paul Harris Fellow designation. If
anyone else wishes to write a note for her notebook, please send it to me; I
will then forward it to her.

Next Week: Our speaker will be Bill Wheelock, with The World Council, of The
Palm Beaches.
