ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
September 14, 2004
After the weather we have experienced in our Sunshine State in the last few
weeks, none of us will ever complain again about a calm, hot, sunny summer day!
I pray that all of you are safe and emotionally recovering. The city
employees and residents of Delray Beach have "pulled together" to do a tremendous
job of keeping us informed and safe. A special thank you to our City Manager,
Dave Harden; a true Rotarian. The neighborly love, help and concern have been
extremely evident; I have experienced this on a personal basis. Now, the clean
up is coming along and soon we will be back to normal. If you are reading
this, it means your electrical power is back on, and that the power surges did not
blow your computer! (Women, we have discovered that we can still survive
without a blow dryer and a curling iron; that's called "roughing it.")
At 7:30 a.m. today, President Bill Adams presided over a well attended board
meeting, with much accomplished. A date was set for our Holiday Party;
December 2, Delray Beach Golf Course. Mark your calendar for this event; more
details to come later.
Eric Meyer is being proposed for membership; this is the first publication.
Mr. Meyer is a local Realtor. His sponsor is Joyce Lunsford.
At noon, President Adams again presided over another well run meeting. Bill
Arnst gave the invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon led us in singing, acappella;
seems Bruce Williams was smart enough to hide from the hurricane.
There were three birthdays: Roger Richardson, Tom Cook and Candace Etzler.
We wish all of you the best.
Bruce Wenzel (who attended last week's meeting alone; inside joke), greeted
no visiting Rotarians today. He did relate that Tom Cook and Bill Harvey did
make ups.
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave the stock report, reporting the market was
"slightly down."
Candace Etzler, Sergeant at Arms, collected $122.00 today. Among the
proceeds was $10.00 from Art NeJame, for the Rel Moorcroft Scholarship Fund. By the
way, again we thank Art for the wonderful picture he enlarged to poster size,
of Rel, for Regie; she was quite pleased.
It was good to see Bruce Galloway back from vacation. He left so he wouldn't
have to emcee the program honoring Rel Moorcroft, even though he had
suggested the idea; he arrived home in time to greet Hurricane Frances! Good timing,
Bruce!
Our 6930 District Governor, Jean Starkey, will be sending out news via
Internet this year. If you have not responded to her request for your e-mail
address, please see Sally Dye with your address. Also, if you have not paid your
dues, please see Sally, ASAP.
John Callahan is in charge of our Student of the Month Program this year. He
is looking for volunteers to pick up our student and teacher each month.
Will you volunteer for at least one of these months?
Since Leo Phillips is still dodging the hurricanes, President Adams
introduced our guest speakers. They were Lieutenant Trisha Dunkelmann, of Delray
Fire-Rescue, Community Education Specialist, and Jim Friedman, Volunteer, of C. E.
R. T. (Community Emergency Response Team).
Lieutenant Dunkelmann has thirteen years with the Fire Department. Her
current position "sure beats riding on the back of a fire truck." She coordinates
the CERT Program, composed of nine weeks trained volunteers. They are even
taught to fight small fires, as well as report injuries; what to do in
disasters, etc. They are also required to take constant refresher courses. This is a
wonderful program to volunteer for. If you have interest, and time, you may
call Delray Beach Fire-Rescue Department at: 561-243-7400, or Mr. Friedman at:
265-0961.
A thought for today: "To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To
one without faith, no explanation is possible."
(A thought to keep in mind as we "slide" down the other side of Hurricane
Season.)
