ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
September 21, 2004
As we all try to get our lives back to normal, we're eagerly awaiting the
magic date of November 30 to arrive, so we may breathe easier. Our meeting
attendance is getting back to normal.
President Bill Adams presided over another terrific meeting. Leo Phillips
gave a moving invocation. Gerry Meeks, songleader/comedian, led us acappella in
a couple of favorite songs. Where's Bruce Williams?????? Bruce we need to
hear from you!
Those celebrating birthdays are Arthur Reef, donating $8.88, and Tony
Allerton donating $20.00. Happy Birthday, guys. Leo and Pat Phillips are
celebrating 21 years of marriage; he donated $21.00. We wish you both much happiness.
Harvey Brown greeted two "foreign visitors." Joyce Lunsford did not get to
give away her banner, however.
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave the stock market report, and as always ended on a
positive note.
Sergeant at Arms Tony Allerton collected a total of $132.88; a sizable amount
for a summer meeting.
It seems about half the membership is lagging behind on paying their dues.
This is something that must be done. If your name was not called at last
meeting, you owe your dues; our president is trying to be diplomatic about this
problem. Please see Sally Dye ASAP.
A note of interest; this past weekend, as the Chamber of Commerce held their
annual Illuminary Awards, at the Marriott, our own Shirley Clark was honored.
The award was for Outstanding Recognition for Business Development and
Community Development for City of Delray Beach. The award went to Fidelity Federal
Bank and Trust, Fifth Avenue Branch, Manager, Shirley Clark. Shirley, we
congratulate you and Fidelity Federal Bank. You have been a strong supporter of
Delray Beach, and especially our own Rotary Club.
Our guest speaker was Craig Angelos, Director of Athletics at Florida
Atlantic University, for one year now. He is now entering his 15th year as an
administrator in intercollegiate athletics, combining this with his degree in law.
In his spare time, he keeps busy with his family of six children!
He reported to us that FAU has already moved into the 1A Ranks, joining the
Sunbelt Conference. This is only their fourth season. This past weekend,
their football game was televised on ESPN. With the coaching abilities of Howard
Schnellenberger, they should have an outstanding season.
Their next game is September 25, 4:00, p. m, at Lockhart Stadium. They are
looking forward to the time when they can build their own stadium at FAU
Campus.
Next week: Our speaker will be Marcie Poppi, Director of Boca Children's
Museum. This should be a good program for parents and grandparents, to find a new
adventure for our kids.
