ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
October 12, 2004
Many of us started our day at Ellie's Marilyn Room, attending our monthly
Rotary Board Meeting. Much was discussed, regarding our upcoming fundraisers.
President Bill Adams and wife, Charlotte, attended the District Conference,
aboard a cruise ship. He came home with lots of information for the club.
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett is diligently working on an event for our Centennial
Fundraiser; more to follow.
Our noon meeting began without music! Where is Bruce? Are you gone with the
wind? Please hurry back; it's just not the same without you.
President Bill Adams presided over the meeting; Gerry Meeks gave a lovely
invocation. Poor Candace Etzler got the job of leading the singing acappella;
she is a trooper. (She got even by singing Rotary words to her Wisconsin Fight
Song!)
Ernie Simon greeted Oswald Wertz from Germany, and Pat Owens, guest of Robert
Erickson. Tom Cook did make ups; thanks. We won't mention all the AWOL's;
they had "hurricane fever." Jim Blocker paid $5.00 for a "hold over" banner.
Fred Bonardi, the eternal optimist, gave the stock report, stating: "the
stocks are struggling." Oil is at a twenty-one year high.
Announcements:
Holiday wreaths: Place and pay for order now; price $25.00. They will be
delivered in December. These are always lovely, and smell wonderful; puts one in
a holiday spirit.
Service Above Self Award: Tuesday, November 9; 11:30 a.m.; Old School Square.
Lunch to be served in gym, after ceremony. This year we are honoring
Elizabeth Wesley. Kurt Godfrey suggested, at the board of directors meeting, that
we prepay the week before, for this event. It sure would make things go lots
quicker. You would not be standing in line, waiting to pay; wait for someone
to write a check, or to get change. Your only line would be the "chow line."
The board unanimously agreed to this.
Holiday Party: December 2, 2004, (Thursday) 6:00 to 10:00. Delray Beach Golf
Club. There will be dinner, dancing and silent auction.
Rotary Picnic, BIWA Park @ Morikami, Sunday, October 31, 2004; 12:00 noon, to
3:00 p.m. This is a picnic for area clubs from Delray Beach and Boca Raton.
There will be catered food, games and prizes. Since it's Halloween, you may
come in costume. Rotary members have free admission. If you bring an adult
guest, the charge is $10.00; children 4 to 9, $5.00; children under 4, free.
Directions to park: One half mile south of Linton Boulevard, on Jog Road, near
the Morikami Entrance, in Delray Beach. Our District Governor Jean Starkey
will be a special guest.
John Callahan introduced us to our Student of the Month, Kyle Fishman, and
his parents, Gary and Linda Fishman. Kyle then introduced his choice of Teacher
of the Month, Patricia Kelly, Guidance Counselor, from Atlantic High School.
With a two page resume for this young man, I will only quote his written
objective: "Since my early years in grade school, I have been setting high goals
for myself and striving to reach them. My objective is to further my education
in the areas of Political Science and International Relations to truly
understand the workings of our global society. I plan to work in some way to
increase both domestic and international understanding bettering relations." (I
plan on writing his name in on the ballot for president!)
Patricia Kelly, Kyle's choice, has been a guidance counselor for twenty-two
years; six of them at Atlantic High School. She has received the Excellence in
Counseling Award, from the University of Miami.
Leo Phillips introduced our guest speaker, Bill Wheelock, President, of the
World Affairs Council of the Florida Palm Beaches. It is a non-profit,
501(c)(3), educational corporation. There are 86 councils throughout the U.S, with
10,000 members in Los Angeles alone. Their objective is to make our world a
better place to live. They have a roster of distinguished speakers.
With America more engaged in the world than ever, the Council's mission is to
promote understanding of the world, the people, the politics, the economies
and the cultures, and to enhance the ability of our citizens to participate in
the global community and to better understand world events. Locally, this
group meets at Northern Trust Bank. For more information, call 561-622-2182, or
go to
http://worldaffairsflorida.org/.
Next week: Kipper Lance, Director of Marketing/Public Relations, of the
Norton Museum.
Once again, Eric Meyer is being posted for membership.
Last week, we bid Wally Doud good-bye. What I did not tell you is that he
donated $100.00; a farewell gift to our club. Wally, please visit us often; we
will miss your smiling face.
