ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
October 26, 2004
Today, we had great attendance; yet, we're still looking for you snowbirds
to migrate south. President Bill Adams opened the meeting; then, Dave Harden
gave the invocation. We had no song leader, therefore, the chorus did not
sing. We had Bruce Williams making beautiful music anyway.
We had four October birthdays: Jon Simon, Roy Simon, (not twins), Bill
Harvey and Bruce Wenzel. We wish all of you Happy Birthday. Also, celebrating
their tenth anniversary are Jess and Judy Sowards. Jess and Judy, we wish you
many more happy years together.
Bruce Wenzel greeted our visiting Rotarians and friends. Dave Harden did
three make ups; I won't mention all those AWOL'S!
Fred Bonardi was in a verrrrry happy mood, giving the stock report; the
market was really up today (at noon). That's the kind of reports we all love to
hear.
Candace Etzler, Sergeant at Arms, did a terrific job, gathering in $251.00.
We have the following to thank: Bruce Wenzel, with $67.00; Roy Simon,
$14.80; Bill Harvey, $10.00; Jon Simon; and Jess Sowards, $10.00. Cliff Ripley and
Anne Bright donated $20.00, "glad to be back." We were very happy to see
both of you. Lyn Huckle donated $10.00, also.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Tomorrow, October 27, at Old School Square, the Simon Brothers, Ernie, Roy,
Charlie and Sandy will be honored with The Lifetime Achievement Award. We
are very proud of them as a family, and also that two of them are members of
our Rotary Club. Congratulations!
ROTARY PICNIC: OCTOBER 31, NOON TO 3:00 P.M.; LAKE BIWA PARK, AT MORIKAMI
MUSEUM. For our members, there is no admission. If you bring an adult guest,
price is $10.00. Children 4 to 9, $5.00; children under 4, free. The food
will be catered by Bambino's Catering. There will be games and prizes. We
will be sharing this picnic with the area Rotary Clubs; let's make a good
showing. Since it's Halloween, you may come in costume.
Holiday Wreaths; Price $25.00 each: If you have not placed your order, and
paid for them, you might get left out. They will be going quickly, like last
year; so place your order immediately. The order forms have been on the
tables weekly, for the past few weeks. They make wonderful holiday gifts, and
will be delivered, early December.
HOLIDAY PARTY; DECEMBER 2, 2004; DELRAY BEACH GOLF CLUB; 6-10 P.M. Tickets
will be $40.00 per person; Cocktails, buffet dinner, dancing and silent
auction. "Invitations are in the mail." We will be sharing this party with
Rotary Clubs of Delray Beach Sunrise and Rotary Club of Boynton Beach/Lantana.
This should be another fun evening for all.
SERVICE ABOVE SELF AWARD: NOVEMBER 9, 2004, 11:30 A.M; OLD SCHOOL SQUARE.
We will be honoring Elizabeth "Libby" Wesley. The event will start at 11:30
a.m., on the walkway, front entrance to the school. After the ceremony, we
will proceed to the gym for lunch (catered by Ellie's, of course). Please be
prepared next week to bring a check for $12.00, to pay for this lunch in
advance. It will expedite the process of paying for, and getting your lunch in a
timely manner, on the day of the event.
Pat Owens is being published for membership into our Rotary Club. Today, Em
Gumm, in his very special manner, inducted Lou Cucci and Eric Meyers into
our club. Welcome, Gentlemen.
Egon Kurz keeps getting his $5.00 back from the green hat, but not yet
winner of the big pot, of around $400.00. (Better watch that guy.)
Leo Phillips introduced our guest speaker today, Poppi Mercier, Executive
Director of the Boca Children's Museum. What a dynamic speaker! (She sings
good too.) Ms. Mercier has held this position for nine years now. She is
responsible for financial management, daily operations oversight, and working
with the Board of Directors, staff, exhibitors, volunteers and children, to
accomplish the Museum's mission and goals. She is also a certified elementary
teacher for the past five years.
Ms. Mercier serves on the Board of Directors of Florida Association of
Museums, and Boca Raton Educational Television. She has been a soloist singer and
flutist with the Boca Pops and Sunshine Pops for 26 years.
She is very proud of her Children's Museum, housed in a 1912 Pioneer House,
called Singing Pines. It has been in this 2,000 square feet house for
twenty-five years. It is located behind City Hall in Boca Raton. One of her
greatest joys is bringing back the simplicity of the 1920 grocery store, the
children participate in. She works with about 50,000 kids per year. There are
numerous events taking place, most of the time. The upcoming Halloween
Happenings, is associated with the Lion's Club. She is encouraging the children to
bring old eye glasses, to be donated to the Lion's Recycling Project.
Funding for this nonprofit museum is from the state, county, city and
private donations. For more information: Children's Museum, 498 Crawford
Boulevard, Boca Raton, FL 33432. Phone: 561-368-6875.
NEXT WEEK: Our guest speaker will be our own Cliff Ripley. Cliff will be
telling us about one of his proudest achievements, The Scholastic Achievement
Scholarship Awards. Cliff founded this twenty-six years ago. Over the years,
we have heard about it; so, next week is our opportunity to learn, in depth,
more about it. This should encourage more of our support each year.
