ELIZABETH "LIBBY" WESLEY TO BE HONORED BY DELRAY ROTARY
DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA (November 3, 2004) The Rotary Club of Delray Beach=20
(Noontime chapter) is paying tribute to long-time resident and community le=
ader=20
Elizabeth "Libby" Wesley by naming her this year=E2=80=99s recipient of the=20=
club=E2=80=99s=20
prestigious Service Above Self Award. The award will be presented to Mrs.=20
Wesley during a special ceremony in front of the Cornell Museum at Old Scho=
ol=20
Square, 51 North Swinton Avenue. Delray Beach, at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, =20
November 9, 2004.
The Rotary Club of Delray Beach each year honors a person whose actions hav=
e=20
promoted the Rotary motto "Service Above Self" through selfless service to=20
the community unrelated to a person=E2=80=99s employment or political offic=
e. =20
Elizabeth W. Wesley, fondly known as "Libby" and often called the mother of=
=20
Delray Beach, was born in DeFuniak Springs, Florida. Since coming to Delra=
y=20
Beach in 1958, Mrs. Wesley has been very active in her community. She=20
volunteers on many committees and boards mainly related to childcare. Her=20=
primary=20
interest, however, is the growth of the Roots Cultural Organization, which=20
she co-founded in 1978. Under Mrs. Wesley=E2=80=99s leadership, the Roots=20=
Cultural=20
Festival has grown from a one-day event to a year long celebration of the c=
ounty=E2=80=99
s ethnic diversity. Mrs. Wesley=E2=80=99s other affiliations include the U=
rban=20
League of Palm Beach County, the NAACP, the All-America City Committees and=
the=20
West Atlantic Redevelopment Committee for Delray Beach.
While working for the Palm Beach County School District, Mrs. Wesley=20
successfully lobbied for childcare legislation requiring adequate childcare=
=20
licensing. In 1979, she was invited to the White House by President Jimmy=20=
Carter to=20
discuss and give advice on the issues of childcare and early education. Sh=
e=20
later appeared with Hilary Clinton on a national panel focusing on the issu=
e=20
of childcare and early education.
Mrs. Wesley has received numerous awards for her life-long contributions in=
=20
the areas of volunteerism and leadership. She was named one of this year=
=E2=80=99s=20
recipients of the Old School Square Cultural Arts Center=E2=80=99s 2004 Del=
ray Beach=20
Life Achievement Awards. Mrs. Wesley has also received many other honors=20=
=20
and recognitions such as the Sojourner Truth Award, Living History Award, =20
Jefferson Award, the prestigious African American Achiever=E2=80=99s Award f=
rom JM Family=20
Enterprises, and the coveted Publisher=E2=80=99s Award from the Sun-Sentin=
el.=20
A plaque bearing the name of Elizabeth Wesley will be placed beneath the=20
Rotary symbol in the Walkway of Honor in front of the Cornell Museum at Old=
=20
School Square. The Rotary Club of Delray Beach has pledged $10,000 over a=20
ten-year period to reserve space at Old School Square to recognize recipien=
ts of=20
the Service Above Self Award. Previous recipients of the coveted award are=
=20
Barbara Dodge Smith, C. Spencer Pompey, Alexander "Sandy" Simon, Frances=20
Bourque, Dr. Monroe Farber, and George T. Elmore.=20
The Rotary Club of Delray Beach was established in 1948. The club members=20
are professional men and women who strive to improve their home and world=20
community through Rotary programs and service projects. Meetings are held=20=
