ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
November 2, 2004
On this national election day, we must all be thankful for our right to
express our opinions; hope each of you voted.
President Bill Adams presided over our meeting; Sylvia Pecaro gave a lovely
invocation; Steve Rich lead the patriotic singing.
Harvey Brown greeted four visiting Rotarians; two of them international.
Mert Anderson did make ups.
Tony Allerton, Sergeant at Arms, collected $103.00. Twenty dollars of this
was from John Arnold, celebrating his "permanent residency." Welcome, John!
Anne Bright paid for the banner.
Ernie Simon read a proclamation, honoring our deceased member, Fred Runkel.
It was a lovely recap of the life of such a vibrant person. A copy of the
proclamation will be given to his widow, Dorothy, and Family. Again, we
extend our sympathy to the family of Fred Runkel, Jr.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Service Above Self Award: Tuesday, November 9, 11:30 a.m., Old School Square
(front walkway). We are honoring Elizabeth (Libby) Wesley. Lunch will be
served in the gym, immediately following the ceremony. For those of you that
have prepaid, just check in; for those of you that have not paid, please give
Sally Dye a check for $12.00 at the door.
Wreath Sales: If you have not filled out an order form and given it, along
with a check, to Sally Dye, please do so immediately. Otherwise, you might
"miss out again this year."
Holiday Party: December 2, 2004, 6:00 to 10 p.m., Delray Beach Golf Club.
Invitations for you and your friends are being sent out. Cost is $40.00 per
person. We will be holding this party in conjunction with Delray Sunrise
Rotary and Boynton-Lantana Rotary Club.
President Adams thanked those who attended the "rainy," but wonderful picnic
at BIWA Park on Sunday. It was a gathering of Rotary Clubs in this area.
The rain did not dampen our spirits!
Nancy Owens brought pictures of "past Delray Affairs" for us to enjoy and
laugh about; how we do change!
Leo Phillips had the pleasure of introducing our guest speaker, one of our
own, Mr. Clifford (Cliff) Ripley. When it comes to supporting education, this
man really stands tall.
Mr. Ripley was raised in Massachusetts, moved with his family to Lake Worth,
in 1947. (I would consider him a native Floridian, by now.) His military
includes the Naval Sea Bee's, serving in Guam-Pacific in W.W.II.
He received his B.S. Degree in Engineering; his Master Degree in Education
at University of Miami. His Education Specialist Degree is from University of
Florida. He served as Principal at Palm Beach Public School in Palm Beach,
and Principal at Seacrest/Atlantic High School, Delray, from 1965-1970. He
has served as Assistant Superintendent in Administrative Services from 1970 to
his retirement, in 1980.
Mr. Ripley is founder and chairperson of Palm Beach County Math Counsel;
president of Classroom Teachers Association; president of Elementary Principals;
president of Junior High Principals, and president of Senior High Principals.
Mr. Ripley founded the Bethesda employees childhood center, named The
Clifford and Madeline Ripley Early Childhood Center.
His civic affiliations are so numerous, space does not permit listing all of
them. However, I would like to mention that Mr. Ripley has been a Rotarian
for forty-four years. We are very proud to have him as a member of the
Rotary Club of Delray Beach.
In 1977, Mr. Ripley founded and still remains chairperson of The Scholastic
Achievement Foundation of Palm Beach County. He envisioned honoring students
and giving scholarships for "Scholastic Athletes." He had observed all the
scholarships given for athletic scholarships such as football, etc; why not
Academics?
Each year, he holds a banquet at the prestigious Breakers Hotel, Palm
Beach. Many very distinguished keynote speakers have been invited. His program
includes, among the guests, outstanding students from the local public,
private and parochial schools; one candidate per one hundred students, ratio. He
feels some of these "kids" have never had the privilege of visiting the
Breakers, much less dine there. He gives them a night with a lifelong, lasting
memory. The total number of students honored in this program in the past
twenty-six years is approximately 2,579. Since 1995, the total number of
scholarships awarded is now approximately 81. Many of these students have gone on to
some of the top colleges and received degrees. These young people are among
the future leaders of our country. People like Mr. Clifford Ripley are
making their dreams possible. Mr. Ripley, we commend you for your efforts.
He has give our Rotary Club a challenge; it is up to us to meet his
challenge!
