ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
November 16, 2004
Our numbers are growing; we welcomed back Bill Talen and Al Seldomridge this
week, along with others. Guess it's getting cold up north; and more
beautiful each day, here. President Bill Adams presided over another well run
meeting. Emmett Gumm gave a lovely invocation; Steve Rich led us in singing. As
always, Bruce Williams greeted us with his lovely renditions of some of our
favorite tunes. (He makes us want to dance around the floor.)
Bruce Wenzel greeted our visiting Rotarians. We sang Happy Birthday to John
Arnold, who is celebrating his eighty-fourth birthday. Happy Birthday John.
He also paid for a banner, but no new visitors to receive it.
Among those doing make ups are: Art Reef, Jim Blocker and Bill Arnst.
Sergeant at Arms, Roy Simon, collected a total of $189.00. Our "Green Hat"
now holds over $444.50. Someone will surely win this soon; it could be you!
President Adams read thank you letters from last month's Student of the
Month, Kyle Fishman (a real diplomat), and our recent Service Above Self
recipient, Mrs. Elizabeth (Libby) Wesley, "Mother of Delray."
We also had as a guest, Jim Scalafani, of the Rotary Club of Boca Noon Club.
He gave us an invitation to their Rotary Social at the Multi Image Group
facility, 1701 Clint Moore Road, December 2; 5:00 p.m.
John Callahan introduced this month's Student of the Month, George Starling.
George is a student at Atlantic High School, with a 3.0. He works part
time at CVS Drugs; his language skills include French, as well as English.
Among his hobbies are reading, writing lyrics for songs, poetry, and playing
musical instruments. He proudly introduced his mother Shirley, and his choice of
Teacher of the Month, Shirley Sears. She has been a teacher at Atlantic
High School for twenty-seven years. George hopes to attend FAU, and receive his
degree in teaching. He wants to give back to the community. George, we
wish you the very best in life.
Leo Phillips introduced our guest speakers, Courtney Santiago, "Miss Florida
Wheelchair," and Peter Castello, President of the Rotary Club of Suntree, in
Melbourne, FL. He was also named Co-Rotarian of the year, District 6930,
last year.
Courtney is a beautiful young lady, confined to a wheelchair when she
developed a chronological pain disorder called "Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy," at
age fifteen. In 2003, Courtney won the title of "Miss Florida Wheelchair,"
and functioned as an ambassador of disabled Floridians. She was required to
meet regularly with congressional leaders in Washington, DC, to discuss issues
regarding the disabled community. This January, Courtney will attend Nova
University, majoring in Psychology.
Mr. Castello spoke briefly about Rotary's involvement in sending Courtney to
Switzerland and Norway. They then presented to us a slide show of her trip.
(Thanks to the computer expertise of Bob Erickson; thanks Bob.) The
presentation showed Courtney, along with her 80 so-called "handicapped" new
friends, from 22 countries throughout the world. What a terrific experience for all
of them.
Peter and Courtney then touched on the Wheelchair Foundation. For $150.00,
you can buy a wheelchair for a person in desperate need of hope, mobility and
freedom. The Wheelchair foundation has been gifted a specific amount of
funds to combine with each new $75.00 donation to deliver one wheelchair.
