ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

November 30, 2004

Looks like all in attendance today had a wonderful Thanksgiving; we have so
much to be thankful for.

President Bill Adams led another, well organized meeting. Rev. Roger
Richardson gave a lovely invocation. Gerry Meeks led the singing, noting that many
of us were "chewing and singing" at the same time. (In my book, that's
called multi-talented, not bad manners.)

Bruce Williams is celebrating his birthday. It was hard to play the piano
and stand, to be honored. Bruce, after you left, it was noted that members
gave money in appreciation of your music. Happy Birthday, Bruce!

Harvey Brown introduced three visiting Rotarians; Bob Witkop, Rex Taylor and
David Feinstein. Mr. Witkop told us a very interesting story. His Rotary
Club of Traverse City, MI was the recipient of a plot of land. Lo, and
behold, oil was discovered on this land! To date, his club has donated 35 million
dollars to their city. Wow! What a fantastic story. I don't think we can
top that one. Mr. Witkop will be spending much of his time with us this
winter. Maybe he can bring us good luck.

Make ups were done by Tom Cook (2x's); Gerry Meeks (2x's). We also had
visiting with us, Don Lerch, Pat Owens and Inga Talmon. Pat Owens and Inga
Talmon are being posted for membership.

Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave the stock report. Her comment was: "the market
is not up."

Tony Allerton, Sergeant at Arms collected a total of $156.00. Lyn Huckle
donated $50.00 of this for the "Rel Moorcroft Fund."

Those who donated their portion to the Rotary Foundation, now total seven.
I will try to publish their names next time.

ANNOUNCEMENT: HOLIDAY PARTY, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 2, DELRAY BEACH GOLF COURSE,
6-10 P.M. There will be a wonderful dinner, dancing and a silent auction.
If you have not donated your item for the silent auction, please call Pat
Archer ASAP.

Holiday wreaths are in. If you ordered one, please see Bill Arnst.

John Callahan informed us that today, November 30, 2004, the first wall of
our new Delray Beach Library was erected. It won't be as long now, as it has
been!

Leo Phillips introduced our guest speaker, Nancy Hurd, Executive Director of
the Community Child Care Center, of Delray Beach. Her achievements and
awards cover more than a page. Most of us have known Nancy for a long time, and
appreciate her dedication to such a worthwhile cause. She has been doing
this for thirty-five years now. This is a nonprofit organization, depending on
private donations and civic organizations to survive.

Their main objective is: "We are focused on giving a voice to the issues
children and their families struggle with daily, and providing our children with
the tools they need to succeed in the public school system. We want to make
sure they are heard today, so they can make a positive impact on the future."

They work with children from low income, abused, neglected, at risk
situations. They nurture them, feed them, hug them, teach them; therefore, creating
a wholesome atmosphere for these children to grow up in.

One of the most rewarding things Nancy told us about was the fact that
through working with the parents, many of them were able to go off welfare, and in
35 years, none have gone back on welfare! This is an amazing feat.

Nancy had with her today, Mrs. Shirley Bryant, Director of Programs and
Operations. Ms. Bryant has worked with Ms. Hurd for twenty years. Wow, what a
winning team. Our own Anne Bright is quite involved with this organization
(15 years). Anne is on the Foundation Board of Directors, and Operational
Board of Directors. Ms. Hurd also commended Jess Sowards, another of our
members, for his fine architectural work on the new structures.

If you have not visited the CCCC, please take the time to do so. It will
warm your heart. Also, take the time to read the brochure Little Voices, she
handed out. It will tell more about this wonderful program. Also, phone:
561-276-0520, or _www.delraychild.org_ (http://www.delraychild.org) . They are
looking for volunteers and donations.
