ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
December 14, 2004
A group of Delray Beach Rotarians started our day with a board meeting,
headed up by our president, Bill Adams. Many things are accomplished in these
meetings, and all members are invited to attend. It gives you so much insight
about Rotary, and our club. We meet every second Tuesday, 7:30 a. m, in the
Marilyn Room, Ellie's Diner.
At noon, President Adams presided over another well run meeting. Jim
Pignato gave the invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon led the singing; putting lots of
"action" in it. He's ready for the holidays.
Harvey Brown greeted our guests today. Among them were Tom Harrington,
Champagne, IL; Ed and Sharon Gorman, NJ; Fred Jones; Jeff Dennis, from Nassau.
Eric Meyer had as his guest, Bruce Armstrong. We were also happy to see Bill
Adams' son, Tyler, back with us. (He looks even more like Bill with his hair
cut short.) We welcome all our guests to join us again.
Fred Bonardi gave the stock report; "unch."
Sergeant at Arms, Ernie Simon collected a total of $166.00 today. Lyn
Huckle is very serious, giving $10.00, to say: "Go Blue!" Tom Harrington gave us
a banner; Art Nejame, in turn, paid for a banner for him.
Folks, it is nearing the E.O. Y. (end of the year); we have made a
commitment to Rotary Foundation, to try to donate $100.00 each, by then. The
following people have met this commitment:
Fred Bonardi, Bill Talen, Pat Archer, Wally Doud, Dave O'Connell, Leo
Phillips, Bill Adams, Dave Armstrong, Georgina Kerr-Jarrett, Anne Bright, Lyn
Huckle, Eric Meyer, Ernie Simon, and Mark Denkler (who donated $200.00).
If you have contributed, and your name was omitted, please let me know. We
thank each of you for your commitment.
We have four wreaths left, at this time. If you would like to buy one of
these fragrant wreaths for a gift, etc., please see Bill Arnst.
President Adams read a letter from our former exchange student, Ollie
Turnen, of Finland. He sent greetings to us, and told us he is entering the Army.
He is quite a remarkable young man, who stole the hearts of South Florida
Rotarians.
Our condolences go out to Jess Sowards and Family, during their loss of his
father, recently.
The Group Study Exchange will be February 12-17. We are looking for lodging
for this group. As you know, these are professionals, from varied
backgrounds. Keep this in mind; more later.
Our guest speaker was introduced by Leo Phillips. He is Robert P. Watson,
Ph.D., Professor of Political Science, FAU. He is an award winning scholar of
the presidency, who has authored, or edited 25 books and published over 100
scholarly articles and essays on the presidency and American politics. He has
appeared on many national television shows, including C-Span's Book TV
Program. He spoke on the topic, "First Ladies." He has such a passion for this
history, he keep all of us intrigued, and entertained. I could have
"absorbed" his knowledge for hours.
Dr. Watson told us he gave his first Rotary speech at age 14. Not only is
he a scholar, he is also an athlete. He was an outstanding athlete at
Virginia Tech, winning a scholarship in football and track and field.
We all enjoyed his information very much; too much to share here. You who
missed him, should try to attend one of his lectures. He can be reached at:
561-297-3055. His book, The President's Wives, may be purchased at
Amazon.com.
Enjoy the Holiday Season; be thankful for our blessings.
