ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
January 4, 2005
Here we are, enjoying another new year; blessed by beautiful weather in
South Florida. We have so much to be thankful for. Among your many resolutions,
please add "helping others." This is a good time to mention, Lou Cucci has
donated $100.00 for the Tsunami Disaster Relief Fund. Let's all, as
Rotarians, get involved in some way.
President Bill Adams led our meeting today, doing his usual fine job. Hack
Allen gave the invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon, back from his "holiday
AWOL's," led the singing.
Bruce Wenzel welcomed our visiting Rotarians, numbering six. Among them was
our former member, and former president, Don Thorpe, DVM; retired to North
Carolina. He was glad to be away from the ice and snow! Tony Allerton
presented our banner to Dennis Weigel, of Muncie, IN. We also had John Ahearn back
with us.
Five of our members did make ups: Dave Harden, Eric Meyer, Lou Cucci,
Marilyn Ochs and Mert Anderson. We thank each of you for your efforts.
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave the stock market report. The market ended for
the year, slightly up. However, today, it was down a bit. Georgina's really
good news was that her son was safe, and visiting with her, recuperating,
after being caught in the Tsunami, as a tourist in Sri Lanka. We are thankful,
and pray for his quick recovery.
Tony Allereton, Sergeant at Arms, collected a total of $90.00 today. We
have now collected $3,400.00 toward our goal for Rotary Foundation.
David Harden brought our guest speaker, Michael Kiel, Senior District
Executive, Osceola District, Gulf Stream Council, Boy Scouts of America. As most
of you know, David Harden is very involved with Boy Scouts; also, was an Eagle
Scout. I noticed that Kurt Godfrey was also an Eagle Scout. Successful
Scouts become successful adults!
After our summer of devastating hurricanes, the Boy Scouts Gulf Stream
Council is "alive and well," growing at about 3% this year. "The mission of the
Boy Scouts of America is to serve others by helping instill values in young
people, and in other ways, prepare them to make ethical choices during their
lifetime in achieving their full potential."
Mr. Kiel told us scouting believes in being out there before problems arise.
There are about 2,000 scouts in the Delray, Boca area. He invited us to
learn more about an Exploring Program in your business; or becoming a mentor.
During the hurricanes, the Boy Scouts fed and helped cover leaking roofs to
about 2,000 people in the Arcadia and Punta Gorde areas. On April 8, a
fundraiser luncheon will be held for Boy Scouts; Frank McKinney will be guest
speaker. Please contact Mr. Kiel for more details. His phone is: 561-694-8585.
The website is: _www.gulfstreamcouncil.org_ (http://www.gulfstreamcouncil.org)
.
Next week, our guest speaker will be Kevin Cooney, head baseball coach at
FAU. This should be very interesting to all you baseball fans.
