ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
January 18, 2005
President Bill Adams presided over a packed house again today. Dave
O'Connell gave the invocation. Jim Weatherspoon lead the singing acappella; where
is Bruce? (We sure missed you.)
We all know it's cold up north; all the snowbirds are showing up. Mark
Denkler did a fine job welcoming about seven visiting Rotarians. Kurt Godfrey
presented our banner to Dave Heffner of Wilmington, DE.
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave the stock report. The market was up today, but
down for the year. She is very optimistic, however.
Sergeant at Arms, Ernie Simon, collected a total of $100.00, thanks to the
generosity of Con Fecher, of $20.00, to "round it out." We also wish him
Happy Birthday.
President Bill Adams reminded the membership that if they obtain a MBNA
Rotary Mastercard, the club will receive $25.00, automatically, after their first
charge of $75.00. This is a great incentive for all. A portion is
contributed thereafter.
Egon Kurz told the club that Bruce Galloway is not well. Bruce we will keep
you in our prayers. We also wish Harvey Brown a speedy recovery. It was
good to see prospective member Inga Talmon back with us, after her recovery.
The memorial service for Ross Rife will be held at Cason Methodist Church,
Friday January 21, at 11:00 a.m. Cason Church is located on the corner of
Lake Ida Road and Swinton Avenue. The Delray Beach Rotary Club sends
condolences to the Family of Ross Rife, a long time member of Rotary.
Mert Anderson introduced our Student of the Month, Kyle Klein, and his
choice of Teacher of the Month, James Peavy. Both men looked snappy in their ROTC
uniforms. Kyle is a Cadet Lt. Col; Mr. Peavy is Command Sgt. Major of ROTC
at Atlantic High School. Kyle is an extremely busy young man. His bio is
two pages long (Is he really only a teenager?). He is in the IB Program; top
5% of Class; he is an achieved athlete, excelling in swimming. He will be
entering the Air Force Academy, upon graduation from Atlantic High School.
Command Sgt. Major James Peavy has 25 years of dedicated service in the U.
S. Army. He is well qualified to teach ROTC at Atlantic High School. We want
to thank him for generously donating the $50.00 check we gave to him, back
to our Rotary Club. He said he appreciates the fact that we give scholarships
to deserving students at Atlantic High School each year.
Leo Phillips introduced our guest speaker, Dorothy Patterson, Archivist for
Delray Historical Society. She has worked for the Society for 14 years. She
is a wealth of information, for our area. The purpose of Delray Historical
Society is to "Promote and preserve local and Florida History." She showed
us various pictures of historical points in Delray. She handed out
information on the upcoming Twelfth Annual Delray Beach Historical Society Antiques
Show and Sale, slated for February 11-13, 2005, at Delray Beach Community
Center, 50 NW First Avenue, Delray Beach. For information and reservations, call
(561) 243-2577.
The committee for Open Doors-Open House, a benefit for Beacon Center, to be
held April 23, at the home of Anne Bright, met today, and will meet each
Tuesday, after our regular meeting. This is a large event, and will take much
planning. If you are not on the committee, and wish to do so, please contact
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett, Chairperson.
Next week: Our guest speaker will be Tom Gregerson, Curator of Morikami
Museum.
