ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

January 25, 2005

The snowbirds have returned! It took Greeter Mark Denkler at least five
minutes to welcome about fifteen visiting Rotarians and guests.

President Bill Adams presided over a jubilant, packed house again today.
Emett Gumm gave a lovely invocation.

Jimmy Weatherspoon, accompanied by our favorite pianist, Bruce Williams, led
us in our happy songs. Of course, Bruce was making "sweet music" as we
entered the room.

We sang Happy Birthday to Lyn Huckle, who generously donated $79.00 for her
birthday. Lyn, here's hoping your birthday was the best ever!

It was sure good to see Bruce Galloway back with us; stay well, my friend.

Sylvia Pecaro did three make ups; thanks.

Fred Bonardi reported we were having a good day on Wall Street; up 120
points at the time. Fred then donned his Sergeant at Arms hat and informed us he
had collected a total of $155.00 for the day.

President Adams informed the club of the passing of Barnie Shuhi, on January
6, 2005; a former member of our club.

As most of you know by now, our club is endeavoring to celebrate our
Centennial Year of Rotary with a big fundraiser event. Our fundraiser committee is
planning this wonderful event for April 23, 2005, at the home of Anne Bright.
With the proceeds, we plan to buy a van for The Beacon Center, a division
of Community Child Care Center. The committee is meeting weekly. If you
would like to participate in this, please see Georgina, Chair of Fundraising
Committee. More details to be announced.

Our newest member, Inga Talman, will be inducted at next week's Rotary
meeting. Emmett Gumm will be officiating (citing his famous quote).

Leo Phillips introduced our guest speaker, Tom Gregersen, Interim Director
of the Morikami Museum and Gardens. Tom joined the Morikami in 1978, as
assistant curator. From 1988-2004, he served as Senior Curator and was appointed
to his current position last month.

He is the author of several exhibit-related catalogues and is currently
working on a book about the historic Yamato Colony. He holds a B.A. in
Anthropology from Michigan State University and M. A. in Japanese Studies from
University of Michigan.

He told us of George Morakami acquiring this land in 1945, and later tried
to donate it to Delray Beach, but finally it was donated and accepted by Palm
Beach County in 1974. He told us of many of the upcoming events and
exhibitions now on display in this lovely setting at the Morikami Museum.

One of the biggest, well known events is the Hatsume Fair, February 26-27,
10:00 am -5:00 pm. If you have never attended this affair, make it a point
this year; it's always a spectacular cultural event. For more information on
this, and other general information, call 561-495-0233, or e-mail:
morikami@co.palm-beach.fl.us. You may also visit their website: _www.morikami.org_
(http://www.morikami.org) .

Next week: February 1, our guest speaker will be Mayor Jeff Perlman.
