ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
FEBRUARY 1, 2005
President Bill Adams presided over the meeting; Rev. Richardson gave a
lovely invocation. President Adams also led the singing. (Where was Jimmy?) As
always, accolades to our "music man," Bruce Williams.
Today was another beautiful day in Paradise. Our meeting was well attended,
by members, and about nine visiting Rotarians. On our worse day, it is
better weather than they are experiencing up north. We welcome each of you. Con
Fecher had no trouble giving away a banner.
Bruce Wenzel, who greeted the throng of visitors, also mentioned the need of
prayers for our friend and fellow member, Harvey Brown. Harvey, we are all
thinking of you; hurry back.
Fred Bonardi gave the stock report with a smile; the market was up. He also
served as Sergeant at Arms, collecting $91.00.
It was a big day for Inga Talmon, she became a Rotarian; giving her premier
performance for the crowd. She is an actress, singer, book and song writer.
Her latest endeavor has been "talking books."
President Adams read a letter of thanks from the Boy Scouts, for our recent
donation. He asked for more information on the Girl Scouts. If you have
connections, please let him know.
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett reminded us of the visit of our GSE Group, from Italy
this year. She will be hosting one of the group. They will visit the area
February 12, through the following Thursday. On Sunday, February 13, Betsy
Owen, of the Sunrise Club, will host them at a barbecue at her residence, 2150
S. Ocean Blvd. Our club is invited, and encouraged to attend; especially our
officers, and board. Donation for this is $10.00. They will visit our
club, and give the program on Tuesday, February 15. This is a diversified group
of business people from Italy.
Ernie Simon read a Resolution, honoring the life of our member, Ross Rife,
who passed away on January 13. He was a Rotarian for forty years, joining
Delray Beach Rotary in 1972. A copy of this will be given to his widow,
Pauline.
Leo Phillips introduced our guest speaker, a man who needs no introduction,
our Honorable Mayor, Jeff Perlman. Mayor Perlman was elected to the Delray
Beach City Commission in 2000, with 82% of the vote. He was re-elected
without opposition in 2001, as city commissioner and again without opposition in
2003 as mayor. As you can see, he is a popular "public servant."
Mayor Perlman is a professional journalist, who is the founder of The
Education Times and past executive editor of the Boca Raton News. He currently
owns Magnum Publishing Company, which publishes custom newspapers, annual
reports and marketing materials. He and his wife Diane have four children.
He started his speech with telling us about his recent photo shoot at the
Marriott with U. S. Senator Bill Nelson, and rock star, Alice Cooper. Talk
about diversity!!!
Mayor Perlman gave us a city long range vision. The Strategic Planning
Committee was implemented in 1988. He gave us an overview up to the present, and
a long range to 2020, reminding us of our quest to keep Delray Beach as "the
charming village by the sea." We are striving to create more workforce
housing, and more diverse businesses. One of our biggest, ongoing problems is
parking. A plan is in place to help eliminate this problem. Of course, prime
importance is our education, and the facilities for this.
Mayor Perlman elaborated on special honors bestowed upon our city employees,
state and nation wide. An example is: Lula Butler (one of our Rotary
members) is City Employee of the Year. Our main goal is "Community Unity,"
bringing people together, in the best town in the USA!
A reminder: DUES ARE DUE!
Please mark your calendar for April 23; our biggest endeavor yet, for this
club. We are planning a Benefit for Beacon Center, for the purchase of a
cargo van. This is our benefit to celebrate Rotary's Centennial Celebration.
Gay Vela requests prayers for her daughter's health. It was good to see Gay
back with us; please remember her request.
Next Week: Our guest speaker will be "Bump" (Matthew) Mitchell. He is a
retired policeman, of thirty-seven years. He is coach of "Delray Rocks."
"HAPPINESS IS A JOURNEY, NOT A DESTINATION."
