ROTARY RAMBLINGS
Rotary Club of Delray Beach
February 8, 2005

Today was a bittersweet day at the Rotary Club of Delray Beach. Many people
had the honor of paying tribute to Harvey Brown, Sr., to his son Harvey
Brown, Jr. Harvey, Jr., attended our meeting, wearing his father's blazer and
wearing his "Rotary Badge," thus continuing the perfect attendance his father
had proudly boasted since 1967, when Bruce Wenzel introduced him to our club.
Tomorrow, February 9, 2005, services will be held at Unity Church, at 11:00
a.m., celebrating the life of Harvey Brown, Sr. He will be missed by all.

Ron Backer gave our invocation, acknowledging, and paying respects for
Harvey Brown, Sr. President Bill Adams led our meeting; Jimmy Weatherspoon led us
in song, singing a couple of Harvey's favorite tunes.

Bruce Wenzel greeted nine visiting Rotarians. We had two visitors with
members. Pat Archer gave the banner to Don Hutchison, retired from the sheriff's
department in Santa Cruz, CA.

Sergeant at Arms, Candace Etzler, collected $134.00 today, thus omitting
"pin day."

Fred Bonardi announced that the stock market is "quiet" today.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: DUES ARE DUE!

The Rotary Club of Delray Beach, Sunrise will sponsor a "Good Ole American
BBQ Cookout," honoring the Italian GSE Team, Sunday, February 13, 2005, 5:30
to 7:30 p. m. at 2150 South Ocean Blvd. (home of Betsy Owen). For more
information call Betsy at: 276-4717, or 251-3582. The suggested donation is
$10.00.

Paint Up Delray is coming up soon. The sign-up sheet is available at the
front desk. This is always a terrific community project for our club.

Ernie Simon had the pleasure of introducing our guest speaker, Matthew
"Bump" Mitchell. Bump was born in a small town in Georgia. His family moved to
Delray Beach to work on the farms of the Lamb Brothers. He told us how
growing up in Delray was for him. He had no shoes, except for the ones loaned to
him by his uncle. (He met the love of his life, while wearing his uncle's
shoes! He had the pleasure of waking up beside this love this morning, even
after all these years.) He attended Carver Elementary and High Schools, which
was segregated at that time. He was a star quarterback for three years, the
three years they were state champs. He worked for the school board for ten
years, maintaining football and baseball fields.

In 1967 Bump Mitchell joined the Delray Beach Police Department. In 2004 he
retired from this job, but not from life. He has been a coach for the
Delray Rocks, for about 34 years, and continues today. He also founded and is
still pastor at Christ Baptist Church, Delray Beach. His retirement has
afforded him more time to head up a program to "focus on our youth." This is his
passion today. Police Chief Larry Schroeder spoke in his behalf, and told what
it meant to be coached by Bump Mitchell; no picnic! He was there to bring
out the potential in these young men; and he did it, whatever it took! I
spoke with others today that had been coached by this man, they have the utmost
respect and praise for him, stating he had a tremendous impact on their life.
Our club presented a check for $300.00 to his new program.
(I don't know how this man got his nickname "Bump," but you had better love
Delray Beach, or he might just "bump" you out of his hometown.)

Next week: Our GSE Team from Italy will be our guest speakers.

Today's thought: Work like you don't need the money, love like you've never
been hurt, dance like no one's watching!
