ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
February 15, 2005

Here's hoping all of you had a wonderful Valentine Day with either your
special one, or just took the opportunity to let someone know they are loved.

In the absence of President Bill Adams, President-elect Leo Phillips
conducted our meeting, doing a fine job. Tom Cook gave a beautiful invocation.

We need to take up a collection to buy Jimmy (choir director) Weatherspoon a
pair of "Rotary eyeglasses." (Of course, he would have to leave them with
Sally each week.) Seems he gets so excited to come and lead the singing, he
forgets his glasses. As always, as we entered the room, there was Bruce
Williams, playing lovely show tunes, getting all of us tapping our feet.

Egon Kurz is celebrating his birthday this week; he donated ten dollars.
Egon, we wish you happiness and good health.

Emmett Gumm, (grumbling all the way to the podium) did a terrific job
welcoming about eight visiting Rotarians. Among them was our Assistant District
Governor Betsy Owen. She gave us the exhausting schedule of our visiting GSE
Team from Italy. She also hosted a barbecue for them on Sunday evening at her
home. She expected around 40; there were about 100 guests!

Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave us a good stock market report today, stating the
market was better today than it has been for some time.

Sergeant at Arms Tony Allerton collected a total of $100.00 today.
Andy Hall made "a paid announcement," commenting that in all the years
(since 1970) he has been in this club, we have had a "lousy P.A. system." He
recommends that we "take up a collection" to purchase a good one; stating he will
be the first to donate. (Would you believe, the system worked well today?)

Ernie Simon gave a memorial resolution for his dear friend, Harvey Brown,
Sr. He gave a short bio on this interesting man. As most of you know, Harvey
had a perfect attendance record since joining our club in June 27, 1967. We
have had the pleasure of having Harvey Brown, Jr., attend and wear his
father's Rotary Badge for the last two weeks. Harvey, Jr., we hope you will
consider making that a permanent commitment each week.

Our guest speakers today were the GSE Team from Italy. Each one of them
spoke briefly; showing us slides of their respective hometowns. What a lovely
country. They all are professional people. The team leader was Lorenzo
Papetti, the only Rotarian, belonging to District 2090, in the Marche Region,
Italy. 2090 consists of clubs in Abruzzo, Marche, Molise, Umbria, and a very
interesting fact; their District also incorporates the country of Albania.

We had Antonella Minelli, an Archaeologist-Anthropologist, from the town of
Isernia, in Molise.

Daniela Tondini is from Teramo, Abruzzo. She is a teacher of math and
physics, awaiting appointment to the university as a researcher.

Michela Terrenzio is from Pescara; she is in banking.

Stefania Antonelli lives in the countryside of Termoli, on the Adriatic
Sea, in Molise. She is a Plant Controller at a world leading producer of
chemicals for rubber processing.

Andrea Cappelli lives in Teramo. He is a lawyer, holding his Ph.D in
European Law.

As you can see, they are from the same area, but with very diversified
occupations. Speaking with them briefly, I learned they are quite impressed with
our area; but, who wouldn't be?

Art NeJame had the honor of giving and receiving Rotary Banners from each of
our visiting guests; what a ceremony!

Next week our guest speaker will be Harvey Oyer. I hope all of you can be
in attendance for this interesting speaker. He always keeps us spellbound.

I have been asked to announce that our Centennial Celebration Event is being
postponed to Autumn. It will not be held in April, as originally planned.
More details will be announced as I receive them.
