ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
February 22, 2005
President Bill Adams was back with us today, leading another terrific, house
packed meeting. Rev. Andy Hall gave a lovely invocation. The surprise of
the day was our "interim" song leader, Sam Altdoerffer. Knowing there was a
large audience from Wisconsin, he chose to lead us in the song, Sing Rotarians
(to the tune of On Wisconsin). Guess he figured they all knew that tune.
Thanks, Sam.
We sang Happy Birthday to Bruce Galloway and Pat Owens. Somehow, I don't
think they are twins, however. Bruce donated $10.00, and Pat donated $56.00.
Thank of you for your generosity. Happy Birthday!
Bruce Wenzel, in his usual rare form, greeted about nine visiting Rotarians.
John Arnold, honoring the visit of his son, Jim, donated $20.00 to the
club. Thank you John. Make ups were done by Mark Denkler and Bill Harvey.
Lyn Huckle had the honor of presenting our banner to a visitor from Sweden.
Fred Bonardi, Sergeant at Arms, collected a total of $173.00 today. He did
a splendid job as Sergeant at Arms, but when he gave the stock
report......well, it was down.
President Adams informed us that a proclamation, commemorating Rotary
International's 100th Centennial Celebration, honoring the two Rotary Clubs of
Delray, was read at the recent Delray Beach City Commission Meeting. After all,
two of the City Commissioners are outstanding Rotarians; Pat Archer and
Alberta McCarthy.
Paint Up Delray is scheduled for Saturday, March 19. This is a yearly
project our club participates in, along with other outstanding citizens of Delray
Beach. It is a fun day for all. Please see Dave O'Connell for details; he
has the sign up sheet.
Dues are due! If you have not submitted yours, please see Sally Dye.
Our Student of the Month and his Teacher of the Month were our guests. They
are Courtney Lamar Robinson and Cheryl Lee Bennett. John Callahan, our
Vocational Service Director, doing a great job, introduced our guests.
Courtney is a senior at Atlantic High School. He plans to attend the
University of Connecticut, on a full athletic scholarship, and obtain his Masters
Degree in Physical Therapy. He is an outstanding athlete, winning many
awards. He proudly introduced his mother and grandmother, stating their support
and guidance is so important in his life.
Courtney then introduced his chosen teacher, Mrs. Cheryl Bennett, who has
been to our club many times. She is a favorite with the students. She has
taught at Atlantic High School for twenty years.
Ernie Simon had the pleasure of introducing one of our all time favorite
speakers, Harvey E. Oyer III. This man knows how to captivate his audience.
We all love this area so much, and he has a way of getting us all excited
about the history of the area.
Harvey Oyer III, is an Attorney at Law, specializing in real estate. He
concentrates his practice in the areas of real estate transactions and finance,
land use, and private property rights issues. His resume is mind boggling.
His education, honors, professional associations, memberships and
publications, covers a written page of accomplishments.
Mr. Oyer updated us with slides of the restoration of our Court House, in
West Palm Beach. This court house has "weathered many a storm," and still
stood. All the records for this county were housed in it until 1955. In 1970, a
brick facade was wrapped around the beautiful old structure, and many things
removed; such as, the columns and steps; and carried away. Last year the
building was "unwrapped," revealing the original structure. The columns were
recovered, along with the original steps. They hope to finish the restoration
by 2007. It will house the history of south Florida, dating back 12,000
years! This will be free to all. It will be an educational facility for young
students, with many planned programs. This has been voted the number one
restoration project statewide.
I hope we can coax Mr. Oyer to keep us informed of the process; and maybe
even reveal more history of South Florida.
Next Week: Our guest speaker will be Terry Zanzucci, President of Delray
Beach National Little League. Steve Bates has procured him for us.
A note: The manager of the dining room at Ellie's, whom we have all learned
to love, Frank Aiello, is in the hospital. We were told he had a heart
attack. If you care to contact him, he is in JFK Hospital.
