ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
MARCH 15, 2005
Today, we all had the opportunity to feast on the typical "St. Patty's Day"
cuisine. I spotted many happy connoisseurs, of these delectable dishes.
President Bill Adams was at the helm. Leo Phillips gave the invocation.
Jimmy Weatherspoon led us in a couple of old Irish favorites.
Bruce Wenzel welcomed about eight visiting Rotarians, and a couple of
visitors of Rotarians. We had four birthdays. They were Jim Weatherspoon, Jim
Pignato, George Kientzy, and Inga Talmon. (Where was Inga when we sang Happy
Birthday to her?) We wish each of you a healthy, happy, long life.
Nancy Owens, we wish you a Happy Anniversary.
Make ups were done by Ernie Simon, Dave Harden, Lou Cucci and Pat Owens.
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett had an optimistic stock report, stating the consumer
report is good; also stating: "the market is chugging along."
Sergeant at Arms, Ernie Simon, had a terrific day; he collected a record
breaking $300.00 today. This is attributed to the generosity of the following:
George Kientzy, $59.00; Jim Pignato, $79.00; Jimmy Weatherspoon, $48.00;
Nancy Owens, $32.00. Jess Sowards paid for a banner. We thank each of you for
contributions; "may you live long!"
Dave Armstrong, our Delray Affair Coordinator is soliciting your help at our
booth. This is our largest fundraiser every year. It takes many man hours
to make this successful. Each member of this club has an obligation to help
make this event successful.
This Saturday, March 19, is "Paint Up Delray." Dave O'Connell is heading
this worthwhile event. We work with the City of Delray on this project.
We have been notified that Frank, our headwaiter at Ellie's Flamingo Room,
is back in the hospital, with complications from his recent surgery. We wish
him well.
It was noted that a recent newspaper clipping, showing a boat unloading
supplies for the Tsunami victims, was Rotary sponsored; another extension of our
great organization.
John Callahan had the pleasure of introducing our Student of the Month,
"Sam" Edouard. She is a bright young student, with positive plans to become a
doctor. She will be graduating in the top ten percent in her class at Atlantic
High School. Her list of accomplishments, thus far, fill a whole page. She
is American born, of Haitian parents. They took her to Haiti recently, for
her first time. After seeing the conditions in their hospitals there, she
vowed to get her education, and go there and open a women and children's
clinic. This young lady is very sincere; a dynamic speaker, projecting her goals
well.
As her Teacher of The Month, Sam chose Carolyn Timberlake, the IB Teacher.
She teaches Latin and English also. She has been teaching for thirty years,
with fifteen at Atlantic High School. She has the utmost praise for "Sam"
Edouard. John Callahan, we thank you for bringing in another great student.
Leo Phillips introduced our guest speaker, Lisa Johnson. Ms. Johnson serves
as the Director of Marketing and Communications for Girl Scouts of Palm
Glades Council, which is headquartered in Jupiter. This council serves about
9,000 girls in seven adjoining counties.
Ms. Johnson has more than 14 years experience in non-profit marketing
management. She has earned more than 20 local, national and international awards
for communications programs and publication design. Looks like they have the
right lady working for them.
Girl Scouting is now 93 years old. Its founder was Juliet Gordon Lowe.
Palm Beach County Girl Scouting is in its 85th year. Of course, the recent
hurricanes of this summer have done extensive damage to the Girl Scout Camps
around the state. They are desperately trying to overcome a half million in
damages. They even have the Boy Scouts helping clear and repair the camps.
She gave us astounding statistics regarding our young female population in
this country. That is why Girl Scouts are trying to make a difference in the
lives of this vulnerable age group. If a young girl has self-esteem and
values in her life, it can surely make a big difference; they won't become
another sad statistic. As is customary, our club presented Ms. Johnson with a
$500.00 check, showing our support of Girl Scouting.
Next Week: We will have a speaker from FAU Athletic Department.
Thought:
Being happy doesn't mean everything's perfect, it means you've decided!
