ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
March 22, 2005
Today was another beautiful Spring day in Delray. Looks like some of the
"snowbirds" have flown north, by our attendance.
President Bill Adams presided; Jim Weatherspoon gave the invocation and led
the singing. (He promised to pass the collection plate next.) As always,
Bruce Williams' sounds of music were soothing to the soul.
Bruce Wenzel, in his usual flare, welcomed about five visiting Rotarians.
Among them was Jeffrey Dennis, the "Island Boy" from the Bahamas, and Norman
Wellens, of Manchester, England. Roy Simon presented Mr. Wellens with our
banner. We also had Chet Snavely, who has just opened a new business in Delray
Beach, Spa Eleven.
Roy Simon, Sergeant at Arms, collected $62.00 today. (I guess everyone had
their birthday last week.)
Dave O'Connell gave us a report on "Paint up Delray." He thanked Pat
Archer, Dave Armstrong, Lyn Huckle, Pat Owens, and his family members for coming
out and helping.
Dave Armstrong commented that he still needs more help on the Delray Affair.
If you have not signed up to help, please do so. We need everyone's help.
Leo Phillips introduced our speaker, Brian Dooley, Head Women's Soccer Team
Coach at FAU. He also had with him, the Assistant Athletic Director, Ms.
Shelley Binegar.
Mr. Dooley enters his sixth season as head coach. He has a dry sense of
humor. He gave us some interesting information about his team. He has recruits
from as far away as Finland and Scotland. He noted that they train as much
as the men athletes. They also teach them a sense of Community Service, with
passion. Twelve scholarships are granted for this sport.
So far, Mr. Dooley has no qualified members for this team; he is the father
of three boys!
Next week: Our speaker will be Sandy Simon; his topic: "Pirates of the
Caribbean."
HAPPY EASTER TO ALL.
